NEWSLETTER No 51 - December 2009

The last edition of this Newsletter has prompted some responses, and the congratulatory sentiments expressed give encouragement for future editions. It is amazing how little there seems to be to put in each issue, but piece by piece it fills with Porteous snippets that keeps an interest in how the other namesakes are living in our world. For the many expressions of support that come forward I would thank each for that, it does make the work worthwhile - RGP.

Crook Inn community cautiously optimistic about plans to reopenCrookInn.jpg (15109 bytes)

Southern Reporter (Borders region of Scotland): 06 August 2009

The Crook Inn is the target for a proposed community buy-out

CAMPAIGNERS fighting for an historic inn in Tweedsmuir are cautiously optimistic about new plans to reopen it. But they fear the proposed changes by owner James Doonan to the 17th century Crook Inn could cripple their chances of running the old coaching inn as a business. Andrew Mason, vice-chairman of the Tweedsmuir Community Company – formed in 2007 to buy the hotel – said: "A lot of people are saying 'it's very good news' and potentially it might be, but we are very guardedly optimistic."

Mr Doonan announced on Friday that he had offered the company the chance to buy the inn and a new car park.

And he said he lodged plans with Scottish Borders Council the same day to convert outbuildings into two cottages, demolish the manager's accommodation and replace it with a new house, and put up a further two cottages and a new farmhouse in the grounds around the hotel. In a statement, he said: "I believe that these revised proposals will provide for a balanced development of the site that will benefit the community, improve the area behind the inn, and enable a viable way forward for everyone."

But Mr Mason said: "We have not had sight of these plans so we can't say whether they are good or not."

He continued: "We have seen some preliminary background plans sent by his planning advisor. From what we can see all the land has housing very close to the inn, the management accommodation has been taken away and, we think, the kitchen. "People shouldn't think this is the Crook Inn saved, it's not, but it might be a first step towards that. "Up until Mr Doonan's press release last week we were under the impression he didn't want to sell it to us, but now he says he would be willing to come into some kind of agreement where he would sell the building to the community. Potentially there is a route forward, but the plans we saw I don't think are really a viable option to run it as a hotel." But he said the company was keen to negotiate with the developer.

Mr Doonan is understood to have bought the Crook Inn for around £350,000 in May 2006, but he closed it a few months later and hoped to change it into flats. "But locals fought his bid, first seeing the plans rejected by the council and then by the Reporter, and last year they secured the community right to buy the old building, once the haunt of literary giants such as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and John Buchan, who lived at nearby Broughton. Mr Doonan said: "I have been impressed with the energy and commitment that has been demonstrated in the recent campaign to save the Crook Inn and am keen to give the Tweedsmuir Community Company the opportunity to secure its future. As a local resident myself I will be pleased if we can all work together to make it happen."

The inn dates back to 1604, a year after the Union of the Crowns, when it became one of the first three Scottish inns to be licensed under the new English law.

There is confusion regarding 'which John' in family #8 is the correct ancestor, perhaps including part of family #8 showing the various Johns might be a good idea.. The fact that the protegenor, Archibald, is a grandson of Dunty is always of interest as well.

I put the 3 Johns in BOLD who were the source of confusion ... 3 grandsons of Archibald who were all born in DFS ... 1777, 1778 & 1785.
Anyone any thoughts that may clarify the problem ?

Note from Pat ALLAN, our genealogist.
Periodically I check various on-line listings for Porteous (etc.) entries ... was much saddened to find the following on the USA Social Security death index:

Alfred John PORTEOUS b: 20 May 1918 d: 22 Jun 2009 Carmel, Hamilton county, Indiana USA
Al was from family #1113 and was a contributer to Barry's book and to trees which Gordon compiled. Al's parents married in Scotland in 1907 and emigrated to USA 2 years later, Al & his sister were both born in Indianapolis. A few years ago I made Email contact, though correspondence was with his wife, Annetta. I sent them a family update a while back ... message didn't bounce, but I got no reply.

The Porteous Associates regrets the passing of a staunch supporter, his contributions will be sadly missed and we convey our condolences to his family.

Flew to Tasmania for a birthday in Hobart then back to Queensland. A few costly repairs on her camper van - "Alli-oop" - before heading south and home to Bendigo via the inland route via Charleville, Cunnumulla and Hay. Alison goes on to describe her highlights of the trip, all of which was achieved on a shoe string budget that necessitated staying in free camps in RV friendly towns where the locals are always a delight to meet.

Christmas cards start arriving in December and it is always a delight to receive each one, hold the envelope, turn it over and see if there is a return address and then to open in anticipation - never once being disappointed in the contents.

One in hand (see below) was obviously addressed in the distinctive Porteous handwriting, that occurs in many different families - it bodes the question of distinctive traits that suggests a common ancestry ?

PWriting.jpg (66561 bytes)

Christmas is once more just around the corner, the small children are getting excited as the great day approaches, when the jolly old gent in the red suit comes by with his magnificent team in hand, for weeks we have been hearing Christmas carols on the airwaves and in the shops, who will forget the big shining eyes of a small child and the wonderment of the words "He came", the true meaning of Christmas that can only be shown through the eyes and mind of a child, whether in our homes or in a manger so long ago.

To all a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year

Perhaps to meet at the Reunion next year ?

Yours Aye

Roger Porteous
