I stripped the cabinets and applied a picking stain to them. We covered the existing countertops with new laminate. The island is built with stock cabinets from Home Depot, the bookcase is an upper cabinet without doors. Rob built the toe-kick with MDF and covered it with beadboard. We also removed the railing to the family room and installed ceramic tile on the floor. The backsplash was left alone, except for the Ikea accessories for hanging utensils.

Notice the red wall, that’s the living room / dining room.
