Bellingham Mt. Baker A Refreshing Change
|
|
Bellingham is the first real US city south of Vancouver. It
is a delightful American city with a population of 85,000 easily
reached from Vancouver or Victoria for a day trip. There are
no windmills in Bellingham but there is former Great Northern
Railroad Passenger Station plus other Chicagoan architecture.
Bellingham is a port so you might want to kayak there from Point
Roberts. At the Cruise Terminal there is a new Fairhaven Station
with Amtrak rail and bus services to Vancouver. A popular day
destination is the Fairhaven historic district easily reached
by bicycle from the Canadian border. There are Farmer's markets
on Saturdays and Wednesdays. In Bellingham you not only see Mount
Baker, you feel it. 870 words
Canadians often say they have no history and speak English
with the same accent. Halifax and Nova Scotia dispel these myths
and are good places to get a primer on Canadian history. In 1995
Halifax hosted the G-7 Summit and changed things forever in the
city, especially with the waterfront revitalisation Disasters
make history or else it would be just another U2 "Beautiful
Day". Halifax capitalized on the renewed interest in the
Titanic with tours of related sites . Lunenburg is known for
fishing, shipbuilding and many historic buildings that attracts
cruise ship day trippers from Halifax.. Wolfville's claim to
fame is Acadia University and I am always suspicious of any town
that cannot do more than be a university town.

| Washington DC the American Experience or is it? Like
the Vatican, Washington, District of Columbia is in one country
but operates independently. It has an international flavour and
appears un American with its numerous Italian and Greek monuments.
Washington is an ideal vacation destination for a partner who
refuses to go on cruises or sightsee. Just give them a copy of
The Smithsonian Associate Magazine. " At the weekends, Washingtonians
read the Sunday edition of the New York Times and visit the Delaware
Beaches or the Royalist area of Annapolis. Within 20 minutes
of being in Washington one learns the names of the monuments
to visit however at the information centre there are pamphlets
and maps on Beyond the Monuments. Places such as, Lafayette Square
Adams Morgan and Southwest. 1679 words |
The Spirit of Saint Louis
|
|
Not being on the destination circuit, Saint Louis is
overlooked by many travellers. It is a Midwest American city
located on the banks of the Mississippi in the State of Missouri.
The Gateway Arch, explorers Lewis and Clark and the RAMS football
team are omnipresence figures in Saint Louis; my rhythmic interests
spotlighted other local personalities , T.S. Elliot, Chuck Berry
and Miles Davis. Why not "Meet Me in St. Louis?" and
we can visit Route 66? 893 words |

Deaver not Vienna, is the One Mile High City
|
|
Denver and Vienna have something in common. They are
famous but few people visit them. Just ask your friends. Denver
at first looks like Calgary but has a different soul. Denver
is about gold and Calgary is about oil and wooing head offices
from Toronto. Shurbert for Vienna and hoedowns with silly bootlace
ties for Denver ? phrases rhymed off to strangers in buffet line
ups or on tour buses when impressing them how well travelled
you are or that once you listened to Alistair Cookes Letter
from America on BBC Radio 4. Here is the list: LoDo, Writer Square,
Coors Field, Colorado Rockies, one mile high, Broncos, Avalanche,Nuggets
University of Colorado. 735
