Tony Hawk's Underground

Introduction

Crowned the "Best Sports Game" at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2003, the highly anticipated Tony Hawk’s Underground is a totally new breed of the Tony Hawk experience. Delivering innovative new features, this time it’s all about the player. Complete challenges and unveil the plot-twisting, true-to-life story that takes a player from unknown local skate punk to fame and fortune as the most popular skater in the world. Along the way, gamers will get off their boards and explore expansive new levels on foot or in vehicles. From putting their own faces into the game to inventing their own tricks and challenging their friends with unique player-created goals, this will be the most customizable console game ever made. In this game, there are no rules...it’s all about the underground.

Story

Tony Hawk’s Underground is ALL about the gamer! Gamers play as themselves and make their way through a plot-twisting story, working their way up the ranks, earning sponsorships, going pro, and surviving the trials and tribulations of a real skateboarding career. Start out as a nobody and skate your way up to a somebody. Starting out in your neighborhood in New Jersey with the goal of becoming a Tony Hawk-like pro superstar, you will need to gain skill so that the sponsors and pros will notice you. By competing in a variety of complex tricks, tasks and missions, you will eventually prove yourself and begin moving up in the world of pro skateboarding.

Gameplay

High Score/Free Skate

Start out on your skateboarding career by choosing a level and then do your best skating in a two-minute session with no tasks or responsibilities. You are able to set high scores and new records in this mode. The New Jersey level is open for skating from the beginning. In order to earn access to alternate levels, you must play through Story Mode.

Create/Play Goals

Design and set your own goals! Choose a level and start creating goals that can be traded with friends or shared online. Some of the goals you can choose are Skate, Combo and High Score. You can even go online and download new goals and play in this mode.

2-Player Games

Play with a friend head-to-head in the 2-Player mode which offers a variety of 2-player games.

Thug Online Play

Online play is available via the network or a Local Area Network (LAN). Are you ready to challenge players from around the world? For Thug Online Play you will need to connect your PlayStation2 console into the Internet or LAN and play up to 8-player games. If you have Internet access you will be able to join games with players from across the globe!

Be Creative!

Not satisfied with the tricks that come with the game? Design your own using the Create-A-Trick feature! Create your tricks, and then go online and show off - or even trade tricks with other players.

How would you like to create the skatepark of your dreams? Select the Create-A-Park mode and go wild! You can choose from a variety of pieces, and use the new Create-A-Rail for totally customized grind rails. Then add to your own goals and challenges to the level.

Create-A-Skater lets you create the ultimate skater from scratch which can be used to play with in all modes of Tony Hawk's Underground.

Create-A-Deck makes good use of your artistic talents. If you are bored with all of the deck graphics everyone else has then you can choose from hundreds of images to create your own unique board.

Skate Shop

You will need to play Story Mode to unlock the Skateshop. Once it is opened you can change your deck, griptape and wheel color.

It's All About You

Download your face by taking a jpeg picture and sending it as an attachment to faces@thugonline.com. You will learn more about Face Mapping from the Tony Hawk's Underground manual. To be able to email your face you must have an Internet connection for your PlayStation2.

Options/MTX Demo

This is the command center where you set up your preferences and save and load games. You can change the controller configuration, adjust sound settings, check out level records, enter cheat codes, watch movies, set up your network options, customize the user interface or play a new game demo of Activision's MTX: Mototrax.

FX

Graphics are nice. There are plenty of authentic looking objects available to practice and perfect the most challenging of tricks. There are dozens of tunes, from which you can choose your favorites by making a personal play list.

Conclusion

WOW! For about the first fifteen minutes of playing Tony Hawk's Underground "Wow" was the only comment I had to say. After a couple of weeks of being immersed in the game, I have a lot more to say and it is all good. My favorite quality overall is the ability to customize. I really enjoy having that control with the gaming experience. It's a tough game that takes a fair amount of dedication and skill. But that is the way it is in the 'real world' of skateboarding. The difference with Tony Hawk's Underground is that you won't have the bruises and broken bones you could have by trying out some very wild tricks in a real skate park!
