The idea of the wheelchair cycle
came from Ross’s love of cycling and wanting to share the
ride with his friend Judy. The wheelchair attached to a regular
bicycle was not suitable due to a high center of gravity and instability.
Ross started riding recumbent bicycles after a neck injury stopped
him from riding the more uncomfortable upright bicycles. After discovering
front-wheel drive recumbent bicycles on the internet, Ross invented
the connecting device for the wheelchair cycle and adapted it to
a twisting chain front-wheel drive recumbent bicycle.
The wide gear ratios allow it to
travel very fast and climb hills. The addition of an electric hub
motor enables the cycle to be used on steep hills and eliminates
rider fatigue. The recumbent position allows for easy communication
between rider and passenger. The rider in the wheelchair experiences
the thrill of cycling and the stability of the wheelchair-cycle
combination makes this an excellent choice for riding the park trails
and the city cycle routes.
