    News & Cast Updates

    Soap Life: The Docu-film

There has been a lot of buzz about the demise of soap operas, but a new documentary just might bring the sad reality into the same world as Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and other big time Hollywood names! Called Soap Life, the docu-film is about the changes taking place in the world of daytime television, and with over 70 interviews featuring fans, stars, producers, directors, writers, bloggers and fan club leaders, it could show the world what's really happening in daytime.

"The wife of our executive producer, John Grossman, who owns the production company NYPS, is a big fan of GENERAL HOSPITAL, and her whole thing was, 'You have the ability, so let's do something to save the soaps,'" explains producer Matthew D'Amato of how it all began. "We started doing research, and we sat down with a few actors, producers and directors, and said, 'Is this is a good idea? Could this work? Should we pursue it?' And we looked it up online and didn't see anything like this, so we thought it would be important to get started."

And the main goal of the film, D'Amato explains, is to generate enough buzz about the possible end of soaps to possibly prevent it from happening. "Hopefully this will get enough attention to help the genre, because we don't want to see it fade away," he says, adding that it's tentatively scheduled for a June 2012 release date at film festivals and possibly on networks such as Showtime. "We do want to see it at festivals, and we do want to see it on networks [so] people who aren't soap fans can watch the film and kind of relate to it, hear the stories and maybe want to pick them up or maybe do something about the genre. We have contacts we can send it to in order to get it out there, so hopefully it will get bigger and bigger!"

Are GH's Kevin & Lucy Returning Next?

As more and more fan favorites return to GENERAL HOSPITAL, other names being bandied about are Jack Wagner (Frisco), Jon Lindstrom (Kevin) and Lynn Herring (Lucy). As buzz continues to generate that Lucy and her Doc will make a return visit to Port Charles, Lindstrom's real-life girlfriend, Cady McClain (Dixie, ALL MY CHILDREN), dropped a bit of hope for fans wanting to see this rumor become a reality when she tweeted "A little bird just told me GH is bringing back some fan favorites. Who will return, I wonder?"

A spokesperson for ABC reminded that the network "doesn't comment on rumor or actor posts on social media."

Kaye's Set To Be A SMASH Hit!

Alright Zendall fans, we know it might be tough for you to imagine your beloved Thorsten Kaye (ex-Zach, ALL MY CHILDREN/ex-Ian, Port Charles/ex-Patrick, One Life To Live) onscreen with anyone but Alicia Minshew (Kendall), but the time has come to sweep those good ol' days behind you: The actor is moving on with another lovely lady in NBC's new musical drama, SMASH! Beginning in the sixth episode -- which a rep says is currently slated for an unconfirmed March airdate -- Kaye plays the recurring character of Nick, who's Anjelica Huston's love interest! So while the actor may not be the other half of Zendall anymore, you've got to admit: His new gig sounds pretty dang cool!

    Lindstrom Finds Puppy Love!

Having spent the bulk of his career as a soap star, Jon Lindstrom (ex-Craig, ATWT/Kevin & Ryan, GH & PC) has had his share of smokin' hot female love interests. However, in his new romantic comedy, What Happens Next -- releasing on Netflix and DVD on Tuesday, February 7 -- Lindstrom is getting an adorable leading man! "I'm very, very proud of this movie," he offers of the picture that explores a gay relationship. "I think it's a little comic gem and given the political atmosphere out there, I think it was brave to make it."

In this film festival favorite, Lindstrom plays Paul Greco, a recently retired, straight billionaire and socialite who finds himself at loose ends until his worried sister (HOT IN CLEVELAND's Wendie Malick) gives him a puppy. "While walking the dog in the park, he meets a young man [Andy, a gay advertising wiz], and they start to develop a friendship," Lindstrom previews. "Paul finds out things about himself that he'd never really considered."

As the new friends explore the distinction between contentment and happiness, they also face complications presented by their ill-informed family members, including Andy's sister, Roz, -- played by ALL MY CHILDREN's Natalia Cigliuti (Anita) -- and their well-meaning advisors. "Megan Hilti (SMASH) has a hilarious scene as Wendie's manicurist," Lindstrom previews.

Ian Buchanan Joins Days of Our Lives

One of our all-time favorite soap hoppers is making his way to Salem! Daytime Emmy Award winner Ian Buchanan — a veteran of All My Children, The Bold and the Beautiful, Port Charles and General Hospital — is joining the cast of NBC's Days of Our Lives. A Days rep tells TV Guide Magazine that the popular Scotsman will play a character named Ian McAllister, a mega-rich businessman with a powerful and dangerous hold over cosmetics mogul Madison James (Sarah Brown).

This isn't Buchanan's first time at Days, by the way. In 2001, he was among several hotshot daytime players who were recruited to play European royals at the coronation of Princess Greta. But, basically, he was a glorified extra. In addition to his vast suds experience, Buchanan was also a cult fave on Twin Peaks, It's Garry Shandling's Show and the Cartoon Network series Justice League, where he voiced the role of Superman's arch foe Ultra-Humanite.

Buchanan starts shooting Days on November 14 and is expected to hit the air February 9.

    It's A Girl!

GENERAL HOSPITAL's Kiko Ellsworth (ex-Stan; Jamal, PORT CHARLES) and his wife Christina Carlo (ex-Leticia) welcomed their first child, daughter Zen Satya Ellsworth, on August 28 at 4:35 p.m. "Satya means truth in Sanskrit," the proud papa explains.

What has the experience of parenthood been like? "I don't know how people answer that question with words!" he offers. "The feelings, the emotions, the expansion of my spirit and vision for my life... I'm literally not the same person." While adjusting to early morning feedings is daunting for most, Ellsworth has a unique perspective. He's already been up at 4 a.m. for a year practicing Sadhana yoga. "It's really been a pleasure for me," he says. "I've been able to focus on my meditation and writing and creativity early in the morning, but now I'm getting up at 4 a.m. for the baby, and it's a gift that keeps on giving."

With his work as The Rogue on ABC Family's THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING now wrapped, Ellsworth is grateful for being at home right now and to bond with his family. "She sleeps on my chest every morning," he sighs.

    Ron Hale Has Retired!

Wondering when GENERAL HOSPITAL's Mike will return from gambling rehab? Apparently, not anytime soon! Ron Hale, who's played Sonny's pop since 1995, tells Soaps In Depth exclusively that he decided several weeks ago to retire, and has actually already made his last GH appearance. And why not, given his alter ego's diminished presence over the past few years? While he takes a pragmatic view of the situation ("It wouldn't do me any good to vent about things," he suggests), Hale also acknowledges that when it comes to Mike, he often felt as if the show failed to take advantage of his unique position in Sonny's life. "Who has the ability to push Sonny's buttons like Mike?" the actor asks. "Nobody. Nobody else can say those things to Sonny and live!"

For more on Hale's decision, see the issue of Soaps In Depth on sale Monday, February 7. And join the daytime vet in looking back on his illustrious career -- the guy was RYAN'S HOPE's Roger, for heaven's sake! -- in the issue on sale Monday, February 21! Soap Scribe Dansby Dishes On New Gig! Susan Dansby -- the four-time Daytime Emmy winner and Writers Guild Of America Award recipient who was responsible for penning the final two years of AS THE WORLD TURNS scripts -- has been snapped up by THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. "I'm going to Y&R around February 6 to start writing," she tells Soaps In Depth of what will be a six-week trial. "I'm told Y&R has been doing this a lot lately. They put few writers under contract; [instead] they bring them in and see if they get a feel for it or not."

The opportunity to start putting words into the mouths of beloved Y&R characters like Victor and Nikki has Dansby "incredibly excited and incredibly nervous. History plays such a huge role in Y&R, so I really needed to learn that," she admits. Luckily, Dansby has someone on speed dial who can help! "My mom watched [the show], so she was my first phone call when I got this deal!" she says with a laugh. Although she says that she never requests specific writing assignments, Dansby -- a recent cancer survivor -- is intrigued by the possibility of creating dialogue for Lily that will reflect their shared experience.

Dansby certainly heads to her new job with a strong daytime background: In addition to writing for ATWT, she's also worked as a director on GUIDING LIGHT, GENERATIONS, GENERAL HOSPITAL and PORT CHARLES. However, the online buzz is that viewers are curious to see what unique things she'll bring to Y&R... and more specifically, the African-American characters on the show's canvas. "I think the conversation got started about the disparity between what's on the camera and who's working behind it," she explains. "I think there's a new sensitivity."
