One Life To Live 1968-2012Agnes Nixon's mission for One Life to Live: "...stories about richly diverse people as their lives intertwined, as they interacted with one another... To explain the hopes and hardships, the goals, fights, and failures that are ultimately shared by all mankind no matter how disparate their lifestyles."If cute, clever, respectful of his soap roots, Nathan Fillion was the only thing One Life to Live ever gave us it would have been enough, yet OLTL, this supposed relic of eras when people possessed attention spans, delivered so much more in their forty-three year run. Thursday's speech, as read with all the gravity and grace we expect from Erica Slezak, perfectly illustrated that the value of soap operas extends far beyond what failing network heads like Oprah are capable of measuring, if something is more about heart and devotion than quick bucks, it boggles their tiny minds. This last week had many other things to love as well. Clint and Viki engaged. Once-bullied Shane thriving and off to art school. John and Natalie (!) finally having their long-promised talk. Matthew and Destiny naming their baby after Drew. Jessica turning out to be Clint's biological daughter. Cole ending up with Starr and Hope. Of course, when you've been on the air this long, no wrap-up is going to satisfy everyone, there were things that weren't so great, like yay, Brody's back, but oh, he never even kissed Jess, let alone discovered yet another wrong paternity test and he, not Ford is the baby daddy. Then, yay, Trevor St. John misled us all, he actually was in the finale, but oh, not even one confrontation scene with Roger Howarth, no seeing Tea's pregnant with his baby, just him held hostage by Alison Perkins, a woman who up until a week ago was in jail, so how has she held him hostage? Those are small quibbles in the grand, beautiful scheme of Llanview, where the actors and everyone behind the camera always got more right than wrong. Marty's rape, and the subsequent trial, hooked me on OLTL, in a genre where courtroom scenes are snoozy affairs, those ones were off the charts good. There are so many other moments I wish I hadn't been late for, like the Aids Quilt, Judith Light's Karen, Megan's battle with Lupus, the Old West, a young Lawrence Fishburne and the majority of Tina and Cord's relationship. But I was lucky to see so much, like the ever-quotable David Vickers. Pa, Asa. Cristian and Jessica's sweet teenage romance. Dorian and Viki trapped anywhere and everywhere. Bo and Nora dancing. Fish. Vimal and Rama. Nash and Jessica in Central Park. Dani. Jared and Natalie. RJ's dreadlocks. Roxy's tipsy way with the English language. Todd and Blair showered with gold balloons. Max and Luna. Antonio and Andy. Powell and Rebecca. The Musicals. Brody in his dress whites. Patrick's poetry. Snoop Dogg. Marcie. Evangeline. Rex and Gigi (and John-Paul's pajama pants). The Evans Family. Little Sam. Both Clints. Joey and Kelly and How Deep is Your Love playing in the background. The Rappaports. Viki and Jessica's other personalities. And last, but by no means least, the loving tribute OLTL paid to soap fans, by having everyone in Llanview, rich and poor, bright and not so bright, women and men mourn the loss of their soap, instead of treating daytime dramas like a trivial thing that only fools care about. OLTL was a smart show for smart people, which explains why, in the end, the suits just didn't get it, but we all did. Llanview will be sorely missed. |

News, Cast Updates and Scoop(News section last updated February 9, 2012)Soap Life: The Docu-filmThere has been a lot of buzz about the demise of soap operas, but a new documentary just might bring the sad reality into the same world as Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and other big time Hollywood names! Called Soap Life, the docu-film is about the changes taking place in the world of daytime television, and with over 70 interviews featuring fans, stars, producers, directors, writers, bloggers and fan club leaders, it could show the world what's really happening in daytime."The wife of our executive producer, John Grossman, who owns the production company NYPS, is a big fan of GENERAL HOSPITAL, and her whole thing was, 'You have the ability, so let's do something to save the soaps,'" explains producer Matthew D'Amato of how it all began. "We started doing research, and we sat down with a few actors, producers and directors, and said, 'Is this is a good idea? Could this work? Should we pursue it?' And we looked it up online and didn't see anything like this, so we thought it would be important to get started." And the main goal of the film, D'Amato explains, is to generate enough buzz about the possible end of soaps to possibly prevent it from happening. "Hopefully this will get enough attention to help the genre, because we don't want to see it fade away," he says, adding that it's tentatively scheduled for a June 2012 release date at film festivals and possibly on networks such as Showtime. "We do want to see it at festivals, and we do want to see it on networks [so] people who aren't soap fans can watch the film and kind of relate to it, hear the stories and maybe want to pick them up or maybe do something about the genre. We have contacts we can send it to in order to get it out there, so hopefully it will get bigger and bigger!" For more information on the project, visit www.facebook.com/soaplifedoc. I got to work with Ice-T, Mariska Hargitay, Kelli Giddish [ex-Di, AMC] and my old friend Dann Florek. We were on location; it was supposed to be the Lower East Side, but it was in Brooklyn in Williamsburg. It was a good experience, though it is hard shooting outside in the middle of winter. You get spoiled shooting a soap because you are inside most of the time." L&O: SVU airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.The Revolution Loses Steam in Week Two(onelifetolive.about.com) "The news is not positive for new ABC daytime talker The Revolution. Based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings for the week of January 23, week two of The Revolution averaged 1.53 million viewers, which was off by nine percent from its already abysmal opening week (1.68 million for Jan. 23-27).Compared to year-ago occupant One Life to Live, The Revolution dropped by 39 percent in total viewers (2.51 to 1.53 million), 46 percent in women 25-54 (1.3 rating/8 share to 0.7/ 4), 44 percent in women 18-49 (0.9/ 6 to 0.5/ 3) and 40 percent among women 18-34 (0.5/ 3 to 0.3/ 2). Erosion for The Chew versus All My Children was not as significant in week two." Week-to-week, The Revolution, in addition, declined by 13 percent in women 25-54 (0.8/ 4 to 0.7/ 4) and 17 percent in women 18-49 (0.6/ 3 to 0.5/ 3), with no change among women 18-34. Kaye's Set To Be A SMASH Hit!Alright Zendall fans, we know it might be tough for you to imagine your beloved Thorsten Kaye (ex-Zach, ALL MY CHILDREN/ex-Ian, Port Charles/ex-Patrick, One Life To Live) onscreen with anyone but Alicia Minshew (Kendall), but the time has come to sweep those good ol' days behind you: The actor is moving on with another lovely lady in NBC's new musical drama, SMASH! Beginning in the sixth episode -- which a rep says is currently slated for an unconfirmed March airdate -- Kaye plays the recurring character of Nick, who's Anjelica Huston's love interest! So while the actor may not be the other half of Zendall anymore, you've got to admit: His new gig sounds pretty dang cool!WGA East honors LabineThe Writers Guild of America East has tapped Judd Apatow to receive the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence. The WGA East has also selected daytime TV writer Claire Labine as winner of the Ian McLellan Hunter Award. WGA East president Michael Winship said: "With this year's Sargent and Hunter Awards, we honor one of the most important aspects of membership in the guild: collegiality. Both Judd Apatow and Claire Labine not only have created notable and entertaining bodies of work; they have gone out of their way to encourage and mentor new young writers, offering constant and solid support to those just starting out in the business." The late Sargent wrote for "Saturday Night Live" for more than 20 years and served as president of the WGA East for 14 years. Apatow's writing credits include "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Knocked Up" and "Pineapple Express." He's produced "Step Brothers," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Bridesmaids." Labine created and wrote "Ryan's Hope" from 1975-89. She wrote for "General Hospital" from 1993-96 and was head writer for "One Life to Live" from 1996-98 and "Guiding Light" from 2000-01. The WGA East also announced that Terence Winter, the team of Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini and Nancy Giles will present at the ceremony. Soaps In Depth has learned that Broadway veteran Hughes -- who is currently starring in the touring production of American Idiot -- is also due on the GH set. Our theater spies report that Hughes will not actually miss any performances, since he is taping on a day off from the musical adapted from the Green Day album of the same name. A spokesperson for GH had no comment.Kristen Alderson signs three year contract with General HospitalFormer One Life to Live actress Kristen Alderson tweeted today that she has signed a three-year contract with General Hospital. Alderson will reprise her role as Starr, the character she portrayed on One Life to Live.Alderson tweeted, "Just signed my General Hospital contract! 3 years! Here we go... You guys ready!? YAY" Just before One Life to Live ended its 40-year run on January 13th, ABC announced that four actors from the canceled soap, including Alderson, would be making their way to Port Charles, continuing on with their Llanview personas. What does this mean for the other three actors, including Kassie DePaiva (Blair), Roger Howarth (Todd) and Michael Easton (John)? Could we be hearing about lengthy contracts for them as well? Check Out OLTL's Year-End Montage! Here's a fun Friday treat for Llanview lovers! "It's like, my favorite show. There's a lot of good shows [that shoot] in New York." Which is why Conn has decided to maintain her home base on the East Coast instead of moving to Hollywood. "I'm sticking it out in New York," she says. "It's better to be in the room for auditions, but my agents are really fantastic, so I get to go on tape. And I'm available to fly out at a minute's notice. So I'll hopefully get the best of both worlds!" Archer Not Coming To GHEver since it was announced that ONE LIFE TO LIVE star Michael Easton would be moving John McBain to GENERAL HOSPITAL's Port Charles, fans have been praying for Melissa Archer's Natalie to join him. Alas, it appears that when Easton told fans at a "Loving Llanview" event last weekend that Jolie would be reunited during May Sweeps, he was just being a jokester. A spokesperson for GH tells Soaps In Depth that at this time, Archer will not be joining the cast. "Despite us loving them, there are no immediate plans to bring her to Port Charles," says the rep.No More 'Dirty Soap'Sorry, soap fans, but there won't be a second season of the E! reality show DIRTY SOAP. "So the word is that Dirty Soap is NOT being picked up for another season," tweeted castmate Jenna Gering, who is married to DAYS OF OUR LIVES hunk Galen Gering (Rafe). "Thanks to all of u who watched. You all have been so supportive!!!"The reality show -- produced by ALL MY CHILDREN vets Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (Mateo) -- followed the lives of the THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Brandon Beemer (Owen) and live-in girlfriend Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe, DAYS), the Gerings, ONE LIFE TO LIVE's John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) and Farah Fath (Gigi), and GENERAL HOSPITAL's Kelly Monaco (Sam) and Kirsten Storms (Maxie). Will GH Get More OLTLers?Might there be more ONE LIFE TO LIVE characters moving to GENERAL HOSPITAL's Port Charles? The latest buzz is that Van Hughes (Cole) will make a GH appearance when his alter ego helps to bring Kristen Alderson's Starr onto the canvas. And while fans of John and Natalie have been clamoring for their favorite pair to move to Port Charles together, the detective's portrayer, Michael Easton, teased at one of the "Loving Llanview" farewell events over the weekend that co-star Melissa Archer may be joining GH after all! "Two words: May Sweeps," he told the excited crowd.Phelps to Helm 80-Episode Telenovela For Nickelodeon; Josh Griffith to WriteNickelodeon, in partnership with Televisa, has ordered 80 episodes of a groundbreaking, original one-hour U.S. adaptation of the popular Mexican telenovela, Reach for a Star (Alcanzar una Estrella) for Nick at Nite, it was announced today by Cyma Zarghami, President of Viacom's Nickelodeon Group; and Jose Baston President of Television and Content from Televisa. The first telenovela ever adapted for the U.S. audience, Reach for a Star is a single-camera, daily series following a teenage girl whose life changes completely when she becomes a star and wins the love of her teen idol. Reach for a Star will be produced in association with Sony Pictures Television and is set to premiere later this year on Nickelodeon's nighttime block for families--Nick at Nite. Production begins in March in Los Angeles, Calif."We have experienced first-hand the popularity of the daily scripted format with our kid audience through the success of House of Anubis and our teen audience with DeGrassi: The Next Generation," and our Nick Latin American channel has already had great success in producing telenovela's with Televisa," Ms. Zarghami said. "This partnership brings together Televisa's un-matched leadership in the telenovela genre with our expertise in making content, and we're looking forward to introducing this first true English-language telenovela to Nick at Nite's family audience." "As part of the steps towards building a strong presence in the Anglo TV market, Televisa is excited to coproduce with Nickelodeon one of the many successful scripts from our library in a daily series format," said Baston. We are convinced that the daily series will be well received by Nick's family audiences, and will capture their attention daily as it has happened in different markets in the world where Televisa has exported its production capabilities. The Televisa and Nick alliance will certainly result in a successful formula, and we envision Reach for a Star as the first of many joint projects. "For more than a decade Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and Televisa have been strategically building upon their regional partnership that today encompasses, distribution, consumer products and co-productions," said Pierluigi Gazzolo, Chief Operating Officer, VIMN. "Reach for a Star marks a dynamic new phase in our partnership and VIMN is incredibly excited to once again be expanding our content portfolio with Televisa." Reach for a Star follows Nickelodeon's success with its live-action serialized series, House of Anubis and Degrassi. Nickelodeon has also experienced tremendous success with the format in Europe and Latin America. The Reach for a Star series is an adaptation of the hit Mexican telenovela, Alcanzar una Estrella, first broadcast on Canal de las Estrellas and Univision in 1990. The success of the series led to a film and sequel telenovela starring Latin American pop sensations, Ricky Martin and Sasha Sokol. Reach for a Star follows a smart, shy and independent high school senior, Loren, who has ambitions of being a songwriter and secretly sends her song lyrics to her celebrity crush, rock superstar Eddie Wild. Loren's wildest dreams come true when she not only wins a songwriting competition sponsored by Eddie, but strikes up a friendship with her idol. Eddie sees beyond Loren's potential as a songwriter and gives her a first break as a singer, and when the truth about his less-than-faithful girlfriend Chloe is revealed, Eddie and Loren's friendship blossoms. The series will be co-executive produced by six-time Emmy Award-winner Jill Farren Phelps (General Hospital, One Life to Live) and Hisham Abed (The Hills and The City). Josh Griffith (Young and the Restless, As the World Turns) will serve as head writer. Nick at Nite is Nickelodeon's nighttime programming block that features popular hit family comedies including the Emmy Award-winning series Friends, My Wife & Kids, George Lopez and The Nanny. GH: Who Will Show Up When?Mark your calendars, GENERAL HOSPITAL and ONE LIFE TO LIVE fans, because Soaps In Depth has the rundown of which characters will be showing up in Port Charles when next month!First up is Finola Hughes, who brings Robin's mother, Anna, back to town the week of February 13. OLTL's Kristen Alderson (Starr) makes her GH debut the week of February 20, and Tristan Rogers returns as Robert Scorpio the week of February 27. That same week also marks the Port Charles arrivals of Llanview transplants Todd and Blair Manning, played by Roger Howarth and Kassie DePaiva. Finally, fans of Michael Easton's John McBain will have to wait until March to see the hunky detective arrive in town! Hillary B. Smith Interview'One Life To Live' Actress Hillary B. Smith 'Sad' For The Fans After Soap's Cancellation. Read the Hillary B. Smith interview here.Daytime 'Revolution' off to slow startLast week was tough for two new daytime series, as the shiny new sets didn’t exactly translate into shiny new ratings. The Revolution, which replaced One Life to Live on ABC effective Monday, only managed to grab a 1.9/5 ratings share in the 56 metered markets, according to ratings guru Marc Berman over at TV Media Insights. To compare, OLTL had a 2.3/6 share in the same time period a year ago. ABC’s other daytime talk experiment, The Chew, had a similarly rocky start when it replaced All My Children in September 2011, but although the ratings are still averaging less than AMC, the production costs are lower. The network has to be scrutinizing these numbers going forward, as rumours of General Hospital’s upcoming cancellation or move to primetime have been fuelled by the pickup of a new daytime series hosted by Katie Couric. Katie was announced four months ago, but has been cleared to air in 93 per cent of the U.S. ahead of its September 2012 debut. Robuck Books RingerAnother ONE LIFE TO LIVE actor has landed their next job! Soaps In Depth has learned that Nic Robuck (James) will guest star on an episode of the hit CW primetime drama RINGER later this season! Even better news for the hunk? We're told there's a possibility that the role may become a recurring one! Congratulations, Nic!UPDATE: A spokesperson for RINGER tells Soaps In Depth that Robuck will be playing Cash, an extremely handsome and physically fit young man. But his lazy grin and casual slouch is an indication that he has the confidence of someone who always gets his way with the ladies! Look for Robuck in the episode airing Tuesday, March 13! New Details On OLTL Stars Headed To GH!Less than a week after ONE LIFE TO LIVE aired its final episode, Kristen Alderson (Starr), Kassie DePaiva (Blair), Roger Howarth (Todd) and Michael Easton (John) are preparing to bring their alter egos to GENERAL HOSPITAL. The Llanview residents are due to appear in Port Charles next month -- just in time for February Sweeps -- which means that the actors are due on the GH set by the end of this month. "Just heard a tiny bit about my first storyline on General Hospital!" Alderson tweeted last night. "Can't WAIT to start filming...not this Friday but next! SO SOON!"But is the move to GH a permanent one for the foursome? Not necessarily, says DePaiva, who took to her blog at www.KassieDePaiva.com to clear the air about Blair's future in Port Charles. "I must say, the ads and the press release by ABC is a little misleading," she writes. "Frank Valentini, [OLTL's former executive producer and now] GH's EP, asked me to come out for a couple of shows in February and I'm thrilled. Not only will I get to work with a fantastic cast... but a little piece of OLTL lives on. That makes me very happy. And who knows where it will lead." For DePaiva's full blog, click here. Sears Gets A Badge!ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Teddy Sears (ex-Chad) returns to television this weekend in Lifetime TV's much-anticipated, controversial new original film, Untouchable: The Drew Peterson Story. Rob Lowe stars in the title role as the Chicago-area cop who comes under suspicion in not only the disappearance of his decades-younger wife (played by THE BIG BANG THEORY's Kaley Cuoco), but the death of his third wife as well! "I play Mike Adler, Drew's partner on the police force and close friend," Sears tells Soaps In Depth of his part in the ripped-from-the-headlines tale.As the 2007 investigation ensues, the accused's subsequent odd behavior raises eyebrows and sparks a media storm. "Their friendship, as well as partnership, becomes strained and eventually damaged once Peterson begins his bizarre behavior and antics for the media, fueling the circus-like atmosphere," Sears says. "I was just trying to keep pace with Lowe during filming. He's incredibly good." Untouchable: The Drew Peterson Story premieres Saturday, January 21, at 8 p.m. EST. The Secret Circle Casts Cassie's Mysterious Father John BlackwellIt's the moment The Secret Circle fans have been waiting for since the new CW series premiered: Cassie's father, the mysterious John Blackwell, is coming to Chance Harbor.Joe Lando (ex-Jake, One Life To Live/ex-Macauley, Guiding Light) has been tapped to portray Blackwell, whose original name in the L.J. 'One Life to Live' finale: A look at the final day of taping(insidetv.ew.com) After 44 years on the air, ABC’s One Life to Life ended its run today with a fittingly poignant finale that was only mildly hampered by the incorrect belief at the time of taping that there would be a future for it online.IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE FINAL SHOW, DON’T READ ANY FURTHER! It was all warm fuzzies here as a baby was born (Destiny and Mathew’s) in the Buchanan mansion, a paternity was verified (Jessica is actually Clint’s daughter), a love fully restored (Viki and Clint), and loved ones were reunited (Cole found his way back to Starr). There was, of course, a cliff-hanger that would have propelled the show forward should plans for an online version have been borne out: Todd was arrested, straight out of bed with Blair, for the murder of Victor, who was quickly revealed to be tied up and held hostage by crazy Allison Perkins. But it wasn’t anything like the final shot that rang out on All My Children in September, before the screen went black. And while AMC fans will be left wondering in perpetuity about who got that last bullet, OLTL fans may yet get answers, as some of the key players involved in that story line head over to General Hospital. Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer), Roger Howarth (Todd), Michael Easton (John), and Kristen Alderson (Starr) will all be reprising their roles on GH next month. But no one knew any of that was going to happen on Nov. 18, 2011. What was clear from the moment you approached the ABC studio in New York that day, though, was that something was different. There was a group of fans milling around the entrance in the middle of the day and, while autograph seekers waited for OLTL actors to come out, there was something else in the air. And once you hit the dressing room floor, still jovially manned by security guard David Coleman as it had been for the last 20 years, it was unmistakable. Tears mingling with laughter was the order of the day, as the remaining cast and crew went about the business of completing the show’s final day of taping. Eight months before, ABC had announced it was canceling both All My Children and One Life to Live, replacing them with The Chew and The Revolution (which starts on Jan. 16). At the time of OLTL‘s last taping day, it appeared that both would go on to have a life after ABC, thanks to media and production company Prospect Park’s plan to move the shows online. That all fell apart the following week — but for the time being, there was hope amidst the sadness. Some, like DePaiva (Blair) openly welled up at the enormity of saying goodbye to the show and everyone involved, while for others like Erika Slezak (Viki Lord), who would appear in the very last scene filmed, stoicism was the name of the game. “Oh, no. I can’t get weepy. Can’t do it to myself. That’s kind of destructive to myself. There’ll be plenty of time for that afterwards,” said the six-time Emmy winner, as she sat amidst the boxes in her dressing room, that now sported bare walls. Slezak’s character ended her run with a proposal from her on-again, off-again love, Clint Buchanan (Jerry verDorn). (Technically, that’s a cliff-hanger because she never answered him, but she sure was smiling.) They’d just found out that Jessica (Bree Williamson) was in fact Clint’s daughter and not that of the now dead Mitch Laurence. With her twin girls safe and sound, all is well in Viki’s world as the show came to an end. As setup began on that final extended scene in the Llanfair living room, the studio began to fill up with actors who’d long finished their final scenes, some who hadn’t been there for a while, and a passel of crew and execs, including head writer Ron Carlivati and exec producer Frank Valentini. (Both have now moved over to General Hospital, in the same roles.) Longtime stage manager Alan Needleman had kept things upbeat on the floor all day, cracking his trademark jokes. But as that final scene filmed and the hugging started in earnest, even Needleman got emotional. Valentini gathered everyone after the applause capping the final scene died down, and gave a rousing speech. Those on the stage floor turned and waved for a final picture. But since most of the cast was not there for that final day, they had been pulled together weeks before for a limited edition official commemorative photo (seen above), which is now available for purchase. OLTL had been home to so many actors. “I’ve never been an adult without One Life to Live. It’s like somebody erased part of my life,” said Andrea Evans (Tina Lord), who joined the show in 1978, returned throughout the years, and filmed her final scene just weeks before. “I had to be here for the last day.” It wasn’t just the fans who’d watched Alderson (Starr Manning) grow up on the show. Many of the crew and staffers had known her since she was six years old. And that shared history was no small thing to her. “It’s actually really strange because I don’t know my life outside of One Life to Live,” she said. “The thought of leaving this family is really daunting. At the same time I know how close we are together and I have faith that we’ll keep in touch.” It’s a stance Slezak espoused throughout the day. “Why bother saying goodbye? I love show business for that. You work with someone in 1978 and you don’t see them ’til 1983 and you go, ‘Hey! How are you!’ There’s no ‘You didn’t call. You didn’t write.’ You just move on. You see each other again,” she said. “And that’s how I’m going to treat all of this. We will see each other again. Someplace, somehow, somewhere.” Stars React to OLTL FinaleOLTL is trending on Twitter! Several OLTL alums and other daytime stars have tweeted their reactions to the show’s finale, which aired today. And the reason for this is that I was raised on Westerns of one sort or another and as a child my fantasy was to ride in a stagecoach and wear the old Western clothes, both of which I got to do. As it turned out, the ride in the stagecoach was probably the most uncomfortable ride I've ever taken. These talks come just weeks after Prospect Park issued a statement suggesting it was done pursuing plans to revive the soaps. Reps for the company could not be immediately reached for comment. While the discussions were characterized as preliminary, one of the options Prospect Park is said to be considering is bringing in an overseas firm to turn the shows into a co-production. That may or may not allow the shows to circumvent the unions, which couldn't come to terms with Prospect Park on compensation for talent on both sides of the camera. Even though Prospect Park signaled they were no longer pursuing the soaps, they still retain the digital rights that ABC licensed to them that last for a full year after those shows end on ABC. That gives the firm the ability to exercise those rights up until September 2012 for "AMC" and January 2013 for "OTL." In addition, Prospect Park could also still be sitting on the financing collected to fund production. It's also notable that the company characterized its abandonment of plans as a "suspension" of their efforts in the announcement, as opposed to a final withdrawal. Sources confirmed that Prospect Park principals Jeff Kwatinetz and Rich Frank are still intent on bringing the shows to the Internet, where they would serve as the anchors for a broader online-network play. Exec who canceled ABC soaps is leaving network(ew.com) The ABC executive who played a key role in canceling All My Children and One Life to Live is leaving the network. The departure of Brian Frons, who will leave in January, comes at a time when ABC has decided to merge its daytime and syndicated units into one division called Time Square Studio.ABC exec Vicki Dummer, who oversees current series and specials for the net, will head the new division encompassing The View, General Hospital, The Chew, The Revolution, Katie, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Frons has served as the daytime’s head since 2002 and his contract ends in January. The network says it was his decision to leave. “Brian Frons has been the driving force in our successful Daytime division since joining us in 2002, and while we understand his decision to leave at the end of his contract, we’re sad to see him go,” said Anne Sweeney, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, in a statement. “We took this opportunity to rethink our business, and the result was the creation of Times Square Studios.” Frons had this to say: ‘While my decision to try something new was not arrived at easily, nine years is a long time in television terms. I’m proud of the performance of ABC Daytime over that time, and of all of the accomplishments that our team achieved along the way. I’m especially pleased by the early results for The Chew and excited for the launch of The Revolution, which will be one more positive step in transforming ABC Daytime for our viewers. I’ll miss my colleagues and the wonderful talent that makes our shows, but know they are in very capable hands with Vicki going forward.” Frons bore the brunt of fan rage over the decision to cancel All My Children and One Life to Live. Both shows were not only expensive to produce but generated low ratings for the network, but that didn’t seem to quell the anger of soap fans who are already concerned about the death of the daytime drama genre. Earlier this year, Frons replaced AMC with The Chew, which is averaging 500,000 viewers less than the soap, but is still cheaper to produce. The Revolution will bow Jan. 16 after OLTL ends its storied run. In the current issue of EW, Frons defends his decision to replace the soaps with lifestyle programs. “People are really interested in multiple points of view, multiple voices. Daytime viewers are also saying that if they are going to give us an hour a day, we need to give them something that is going to improve their lives…. All of daytime is learning to survive on smaller audience shares because there are so many choices. You can’t spend more money for less audience. That’s why you see people going toward programming forms that cost less to produce.” More soap opera drama: Brian Frons out at ABC(latimes.com) The drama continues at ABC Daytime.Brian Frons, the longtime president of ABC Daytime, is leaving the network amid its high-stakes transition from soap operas to lower-cost talk and lifestyle shows. In recent months, there have been rumblings about Frons' own future as ABC canceled two of its three long-running soap operas --"All My Children" and "One Life To Live." Frons joined the network in 2002 to oversee soap operas and other daytime programming. But the once lucrative soap opera genre has steadily lost viewers, and the shows are no longer profitable. The Walt Disney Co.-owned network will plug its daytime programming block with lower-cost shows like "The Chew," about food, and upcoming "The Revolution," a makeover show. Frons -- who began his television career at CBS in 1978 -- had less experience with those formats. He will stay on until his contract ends in January. ABC said Vicki Dummer, who joined ABC in 1996 and oversees specials and established prime-time shows, would replace Frons. ABC also said Friday that it was creating Times Square Studios, which it described as an "integrated current entertainment programming and development division." The new studio will oversee the production of such daytime shows as "The View," "The Chew" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." Dummer, whose new title is executive vice president of Times Square Studios, Current Series and Specials, will retain some of her responsibilities in prime-time. Dummer helped develop such ABC hits as "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Dharma & Greg." She will report to ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee. The move sets up a new, more streamlined, management structure. Frons had reported to Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney/ABC Television Group. "Brian Frons has been the driving force in our successful daytime division since joining us in 2002, and while we understand his decision to leave at the end of his contract, we are sad to see him go," Sweeney said in a statement. ABC declined to make its executives available for interviews. The company also is scrapping its SoapNet cable channel, which had been dedicated to soaps, rebranding it as Disney Junior and stocking it with programming that appeals to the preschool crowd. Frons, despite his credentials, was reviled among soap opera fans after announcing this year that the network would cancel "All My Children," which ended in September, and "One Life to Live," which goes off the air next month. Fans launched online petitions and a Facebook page demanding that he be fired. On the Facebook page, the bespectacled executive was portrayed as "the Grim Reaper of Daytime," wearing a hooded black frock and wielding a scythe. Frons' departure was announced one day after he fired Jill Farren Phelps, the executive producer of "General Hospital." Frank Valentini, executive producer of "One Life to Live," replaces Phelps. ABC Daytime President Brian Frons Steps Down(hollywoodreporter.com) Vicki Dummer will take over duties through a new integrated division called Times Square Studios. After steering ABC through the cancellation of long running soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live, ABC daytime president Brian Frons is leaving the company. He’ll be replaced by Vicki Dummer, senior vp of current series and specials. Dummer will preside over a new integrated current entertainment and programming division called Times Square Studios that will consolidate daytime and syndicated programming and development. The View, General Hospital, The Chew, The Revolution, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Katie Couric’s upcoming talk show will come under that umbrella. Live! with Kelly will remain part of the ABC Owned Television Stations Group division. Dummer, who was named to her current post last June after running the unscripted division with John Saade, will continue to report to ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee. Frons will stay on to assist with the transition and depart at the end of his contract in January. Frons made the decision to depart, say ABC sources, though it’s unclear where he’ll go next. He was on the receiving end of much of the ire of very vocal soap fans who inundated him with thousands of emails. They also launched protest web sites and even picketed the network’s upfront presentation in New York last May. Dummer will continue to be based out of ABC's Burbank headquarters. Abra Potkin, formerly of CBS News, joins the company as senior vp of east coast programming and development for Times Square Studios, while Ann Lewis Roberts will be Potkin's counterpart on the west coast. They will both will report to Dummer. The moves comes at a busy time for ABC daytime which this year launched the lifestyle and cooking show The Chew and in January is set to bow a second lifestyle transformation show called The Revolution, which featured a panel of experts including Project Runway’s Tim Gunn and Home Edition’s Ty Pennington. Shows like The Chew and The Revolution are much cheaper to produce than soap operas, which have seen their viewership decline in recent years. Meanwhile, ABC has set Couric's talk show Katie for a fall 2012 premiere. It has already been cleared in 80 percent of the country. Frons joined ABC in 2002 and was promoted to his current position in 2006. In a statement, Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, characterized Frons as "the driving force" in the network's "successful" daytime division. "While we understand his decision to leave at the end of his contract, we’re sad to see him go," she said. “We took this opportunity to rethink our business, and the result was the creation of Times Square Studios. Having it be part of the ABC Entertainment Group, under the supervision of proven executives Vicki Dummer and Paul Lee, provides us the opportunity to bring greater creative resources, development strength and operational flexibility to this key area of our business.” Added Frons: “While my decision to try something new was not arrived at easily, nine years is a long time in television terms. I’m proud of the performance of ABC daytime over that time, and of all of the accomplishments that our team achieved along the way. I’ll miss my colleagues and the wonderful talent that makes our shows, but know they are in very capable hands with Vicki going forward.” 'Teen Wolf' Season 2: 'Dawson's Creek' star John Wesley Shipp gets madJohn Wesley Shipp (ex-Eddie, OLTL/ex-Kelly, GL/ex-Doug, ATWT/ex-Martin, Santa Barbara) will be playing Isaac's not-so-nice dad -- and the owner of Beacon Hills Cemetery. He sees a whole new side of his son after Derek brings Isaac into the wolf pack, and a few "mysterious incidents" plague him in particular. Shipp is headed to Atlanta to begin shooting the intense role next week. MTV confirms that we can expect to see him in two episodes.Of course, we know Shipp best from his role as Mitch, Dawson's ill-fated father, on "Dawson's Creek," but he's also got a following for his superhero role as "The Flash," in the early '90s. "Expanding my pantheon of Dads with WILDLY various parenting techniques-- from 'Have fun! Play Safe!' to beating my son unconscious," he wrote on his Facebook on Friday, Dec. 2. "I am happy to announce a new Dad: this time around for a couple of episodes of 'Teen Wolf.' Shooting commences December 6." (Just because it's awesome, we'd also like to share with you that the status update got a friendly comment from Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Dawson's mom! "Big smile :) Love you my immortal husband...XO," she wrote. Best. Thing. Ever.) Hopefully, this time he won't be the victim of death-by-ice-cream. Relive the tragedy here. 'One Life to Live' says goodbye to its ABC studio(www.ew.com) (Photo 1, Photo 2) A day filled with tears, laughter, and hugs erupted into applause when the last scene of One Life to Live finished taping in its ABC studio Friday. Today saw scenes moving along at the famously whiplash-like speed common for daytime soaps, but with increasing fanfare and emotion. Then the studio quietly began to fill up in the late afternoon as Erika Slezak (Viki Buchanan) and Jerry vern Dorn (Clint Buchanan, right) started to shoot that last scene (which is not the last one that will be seen on the show’s finale in January) in Viki’s Llanfair living room.Ever the pro, Slezak was determined not to break down and cry as the time approached, but even as she blinked back the tears, she had hugs for everyone who wanted one, such as Melissa Archer, who played her daughter Natalie and who went straight in for this embrace as soon as the scene was wrapped. “Why bother say goodbye?” said Slezak, who sees this as just closing a chapter. “We will see each other again, someplace, somehow, somewhere.” One Life to Live has been on the air since 1968. ABC announced the show’s cancellation in April, along with that of All My Children, and then licensed both shows to Prospect Park, a media and production company founded in 2009 by Jeffrey Kwatinetz and former Disney Studios head Rich Frank, for an Internet version. Slezak has signed on to follow the show online, along with many others such Ted King (Tomas Delgado), Michael Easton (John McBain), and Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer). “You were all a part of something so extraordinary,” said exec producer Frank Valentini (above, left) to the cast and crew gathered around when the applause died down after that final scene. He’s also signed on for the online show. “I count us all so lucky and so blessed to be a part of this.” OLTL Actors On Final Day At ABCToday is the final day of production at ABC studios for the cast and crew of OLTL. It's been a long and emotional day for many. Here's what some of the stars are saying on Twitter:"My heart feels this IS Black-est Friday. My mind-confused by rumors about Prospect Park. Diagnosed this past April following her annual mammogram, Evans tells Soaps In Depth that she initially didn't feel any abnormalities during her routine self-exam. "I missed it, and that frequently happens," she says, adding that she instantly hit the ground running with treatment."It was my choice to go through more aggressive treatment because I want the chances of recurrence to be null and non-existent. I had options presented to me that would have been the easier route. I chose the more difficult route because I don't want to go through this again," explains Evans, who returned to the OLTL set only a few weeks after completing chemotherapy and undergoing reconstructive surgery. "It was very important for me to come forward now that the treatment is done. I'm back at work not only to let the fans know how important they are to me, but to have the fans see what they wanted -- Tina and Cord together again," smiles Evans. With a clean bill of health and literally a new lease on life, the beloved actress hopes that sharing her story will help other women to be proactive. "If you feel something, take care of it. Get your mammograms," insists Evans who for years served as the celebrity ambassador for City Of Hope's Breast Cancer Walk. And she admits it was her own campaign work to raise awareness about the disease which "saved" her own life. She adds, "I did monthly (mammogram) exams, but I missed it.
