Star power should heat up Dallas for Super BowlThe sheer star power headed to Dallas for Super Bowl week should help thaw some of the ice that has blanketed the area.Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are expected. Garth Brooks is slated to participate in a football camp for kids. Pamela Anderson is hosting a party with Playboy models. Prince, Snoop Dogg, Flo Rida, Duran Duran and Kid Rock are among those performing at events leading up to the big game. Diddy is having a big bash. Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora is having a fashion show featuring the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Even the Black Eyed Peas will play party hosts before performing at halftime on Sunday. And that's just for starters. "I must say, it will probably be quite a festive occasion for those who are die-hard fans for either team," said Grammy nominee Cee Lo Green, who will be performing Saturday at the Axe Lounge. "I myself am going down for a different capacity. I'm going to perform, be a star and be sexy. I'm not necessarily going down as a sports fan, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it, because I'll be safe and secure in a skybox somewhere, checking out the game," he said this week. The usually temperate Dallas was hit by a massive storm blanketing much of the country this week. Temperatures were hovering in the 20s and 30s, but were expected to warm to at least the 50s for the Sunday's big game. It's a far cry from the balmy weather in the Miami area, where the Super Bowl was held last year. But Paul "Pauly D" DelVecchio from MTV's reality phenomenon "Jersey Shore" said he expects the party situation to be just as high in Dallas as it was in South Beach. "I've been to Texas before, and they party just as hard as Miami, and they know how to have a good time, so I'm looking forward to partying in Dallas," he said. He plans to hit a few parties as well, which will make his famous "T-shirt time" a challenge. "It's tough, it's tough! So what you do you switch up your T-shirts in between events, so you have a T-shirt time in between each party," he said. Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran said he's always enjoyed Dallas too, but said the icy weather that greeted him on his arrival Tuesday night from London was a bit of a surprise. "I've been to Dallas so many times and it's only ever been sweltering hot. It was quite a shock when we landed," he said. Rhodes will perform at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, just outside of Dallas, along with Kid Rock and Jason Derulo on Thursday as part of the NFL's Fan Jam concert. The cold is not expected to impact the scantily clad outfits expected at some of the more adult-oriented parties, like those hosted by Maxim and Playboy. Former Playboy models and "Girls Next Door" stars Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt will also be in town, hosting a "Leather & Laces" party on Saturday night. "Super Bowl parties are just always fun," Madison said. Maxim's expected guest list includes Chord Overstreet and Mark Salling of "Glee," Chris Brown, members of Maroon 5 (who will be also playing the Super Bowl pre-party on Sunday), Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and Wyclef Jean. Maxim editor-in-chief Joe Levy said the Super Bowl, being the "world's biggest man's event," fits right in with the men's magazine. He said the party at Fair Park, where the Texas State Fair is held, will have not only a Ferris wheel and bumper cars, but also lots of gadgets from sponsor Motorola. "I'm told everything is bigger in Texas, so we needed to go to the State Fair to have a party this big," he said. While many of the parties are exclusive, invite-only soirees for A-list guests, some events are open to the public for a price — often a high one. Prince will be performing Friday night for a fundraiser to benefit the Goss-Michael Foundation, founded in Dallas by British pop star George Michael and his partner, Texan Kenny Goss; tickets start at $1,500. There are also plenty of opportunities for commercial branding. Express is setting up a gifting suite, while the Audi Forum Dallas will host three events, with celebrities including Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Matthew Morrison of "Glee," Chace Crawford of "Gossip Girl," Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and his fiance (and Crawford's sister) Candice Crawford, a local TV reporter, expected. Pamela Anderson is set to host a Super Bowl party put on by Dallas-based Willis & Woy Sports Group with several Playboy models set to attend the event. "I'll probably run into a lot of friends," she said. "Everybody's there." Pete Wentz is returning to the Super Bowl this year as part of the "Tweet Race" for Mercedes-Benz in which he, Serena Williams, New York Yankee Nick Swisher and Rev. Run are coaching two-person teams trying to generate the most tweets for a charity. Like many celebrities, he was not focused on Sunday's game (which is between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers, by the way). "To me it's like everything around the game, because I don't know that much about sports," he laughed. Anderson shaken by 'fan' arrestPamela Anderson was left shaken on Sunday evening when U.K. police arrested a man who allegedly became violent after trying to confront the blonde beauty on a train in Liverpool, England. The former Baywatch star was set to leave Liverpool Lime Street railway station to travel to London after finishing her run in traditional festive pantomime Aladdin when an overzealous fan tried to board the same carriage. British Transport Police officials were alerted and tried to convince the man to leave, but after the run-in turned nasty, cops were forced to use pepper spray to restrain the suspect. Photographs of the incident show four officers carrying the suspect away from the train while a terrified Anderson looks on. A spokesperson for British Transport Police said a 21-year-old was taken into custody "after an altercation took place in which a police officer was assaulted. The man became verbally abusive to rail staff (as) he was asked to produce a ticket. British Transport Police attend(ed) and the man became violent and assaulted an officer and was arrested. Officers were forced to use capture spray as the man resisted arrest." A representative for the star wrote on Twitter.com, "Pamela Anderson is safe and sound on train back to the English capital - no problems with her safety due to excellent security personnel." Anderson PETA's Person of the YearPamela Anderson has been honoured for her tireless work to end animal cruelty - she's been named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)'s Person of the Year. The former Baywatch beauty was awarded the title after a year in which she drew attention to animal rights issues by speaking to students at the U.K.'s prestigious Oxford University, posing for pictures with her body painted in butcher markings, and filming a TV commercial in which she strip-searches plane passengers for hidden furs and pelts. The vegetarian actress/model also adopted stray dogs from an animal shelter and called on leaders in India to ban the country's "unspeakably cruel" trade in leather. And her efforts to promote the cause have now been recognised by officials at PETA, who named her their Person of the Year for 2010 on Friday. A spokeswoman for the campaign group tells WENN, "For years, Anderson has been penning letters and posing in ads for PETA U.K.'s American affiliate in order to raise awareness of cruelty to animals and demonstrate how easy it is to avoid contributing to animal suffering." Pamela Anderson advert too racy for Hong Kong airportAn animal rights commercial starring former Playboy centrefold Pamela Anderson, which is banned at some US airports, has been deemed too racy for Hong Kong, one of Asia's busiest aviation hubs. The advertisement, titled "Cruelty Doesn't Fly", features the scantily-clad former "Baywatch" star as an airport security guard who strips passengers of leather, fur and other skins. A couple, seen nude from behind, also appears in the video commercial created by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). "Given the groping that you see at security checkpoints and the nudity that you see in body scans we're surprised that our lighthearted ad was deemed too risqué", said Jason Baker, PETA Asia's vice president. The animal rights group said its ad was vetoed by JCDecaux, the advertising agency responsible for airing videos at Hong Kong's airport. In a statement, the city's airport authority said the commercial was "considered inappropriate" because it might offend some visitors. The ad -- which also features comedian Steve-O, a star of the 'Jackass' movie series, and German punk icon Nina Hagen -- is already banned at airports in New York City and Boston, PETA said. The animal rights group said it still hoping to run the ad in other Asia-Pacific airports, including Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney. Anderson pays off latest tax debtPamela Anderson's publicist is playing down reports the actress/model is facing another tax dilemma, insisting a new claim has already been settled. The former Baywatch star has been hit with a number of tax issues in the last 18 months, and TMZ.com reports she was handed another federal tax lien for $180,000 last month. It came a year after the State of California filed a separate tax lien against her for $493,144. Anderson responded to the 2009 lien, stating, “Mistakes may have been made in calculating taxes owed and we are now in the process of ensuring that any taxes owed are paid.” And her rep tells the website her latest lien has been paid. Anderson's airport ad groundedA racy animal rights advert featuring Pamela Anderson has been banned from an airport in Boston, Massachusetts after officials deemed the promo too risque.Anderson is seen posing as a scantily-clad member of airport security staff in the clip for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which was to be shown on Logan International Airport's Wi-Fi internet network. She is seen stripping passengers, including Jackass star Steve-O and comic Andy Dick, of their leather, fur and other animal products as they pass through security checks. But officials at the airport have banned the clip, claiming it is unsuitable to be seen by passengers, according to the Boston Herald. A PETA spokesperson says, "Given the groping that you see at security checkpoints - and the nudity that you see in body scans - we're surprised that our lighthearted ad was deemed too risque." Last year, the same advert was banned from all three New York City airports by officials amid fears it would offend passengers with young children. Pamela Anderson in Indian reality TV showCanadian model and former "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson is to appear in reality television show "Bigg Boss", the Indian version of "Big Brother".Anderson, 43, was set to arrive in Mumbai late Monday and enter the live studio near the city on Tuesday, a spokesman for the Colors television channel said. The actress, who appeared nude in Playboy magazine earlier this year, will join other contestants on the show including a former bandit and the Great Khali, a popular World Wrestling Entertainment performer. "Bigg Boss", which is in its fourth series, ran into controversy in the first week of this year's edition when activists of the Hindu nationalist Shiv Sena party protested against two Pakistani artists appearing on the show. The show, hosted by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, included Pakistanis Veena Malik and Ali Saleem. Indian police arrested 25 people at the protest. Pam Anderson vs. Hasidic HeadwearHas Pamela Anderson taken her PETA-friendly Fashion Police act too far this time?Arriving in Israel on Sunday to participate as a guest judge and perform in the country's version of Dancing With the Stars, the ex-Baywatch beauty and avid animal-rights booster is looking to meet with Orthodox Jewish leaders to persuade them to ban the use of fur in traditional Hasidic headwear. At issue is a bill that's before the Israeli parliament that would potentially restrict the use of fur in those furry black hats ultra-religious Jewish men often wear during the Jewish holidays—a custom that date back more than 200 years. The bill has been put on hold because the Hasidic sects make up a significant voting block. Anderson, an honorary director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal, turned up in Tel Aviv to receive an honorary award. While there, she told reporters her work on behalf of animals "has been really inspiring. I feel like I have actually done something." The pinup also praised Israel as a "progressive" nation and an "example for the rest of the world" for opting not to operate fur farms. However, Anderson said she hoped to put her sexy feminine wiles to good use convincing Hassidim to think about replacing fur with other material. "It's almost 2011. There are so many alternatives to things," she said. "We can be compassionate in our choices." Good luck with that. Orthodox sects began donning black furry hats and black coats in the 1700s to symbolize their devotion in response to the increasing secularization and assimiliation of Jews in mainstream European society. Anderson later paid a visit to the Western Wall covering up her head and shoulders and praying silently with starstruck worshippers. Anderson involved in minor crashPamela Anderson has been left shaken up after a minor accident in Tel Aviv, Israel. The actress/model was on her way to meet the celebrity contestants taking part in the country's upcoming Dancing With The Stars show, which she will guest on this week, when her chauffeur-driven BMW collided with a concrete post in a parking structure on the set of the programme. Anderson was quickly transferred to another vehicle and driven to her destination. A source tells WENN, "She was a little shaken but uninjured." Earlier on Sunday, the former Baywatch babe, who competed on the American version of the hit show last year, appeared at a press conference at the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv with her dance partner, Australian Damian Whitewood. She told reporters she had been planning a trip to Israel for many years, explaining, "My good friend David Lachapelle was just here - his exhibit is still up at the Museum of Contemporary Art - and he had the most fantastic time. "We don't get to hear about all the wonderful things in Israel, and just looking out my window here at the hotel and seeing the beautiful beach, my goodness, it's gorgeous! I'm sure I'll be going back (to the U.S.) with raving reviews." The Israeli Dancing With The Stars has already made big headlines - one of this season's contestants, Gili Shem Tov, has made history by becoming the first celebrity to hit the dancefloor with a same sex partner. The openly-gay sportscaster has been competing with professional dancer Dorit Millman. Anderson and Whitewood will perform two sensual dances on the show on Monday and Tuesday night. Pamela Anderson in Israel to promote fur banFormer "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson said Sunday she will try her powers of seduction while in Israel on an unlikely audience — ultra-Orthodox Jewish lawmakers.Anderson, an honorary director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is in Israel to participate in the local version of "Dancing with the Stars." Her work for animals "has been really inspiring," she said. "I feel like I have actually done something." An anti-fur bill has been put on hold in Israel over concerns by ultra-Orthodox leaders that it could impact production of the characteristic fur hats worn by some men from Hassidic sects on holidays and other festive occasions. To combat growing secularization of Jews to European society in the 18th century, Hassidic Jews decided that their way of dress should remain intact and not be influenced by fashion. Descendants of these communities to this day wear the black hats and coats of that period, including, at times, fur hats. Anderson called Israel a "progressive" country because it had no fur farms, and said that it can serve as "an example for the rest of the world." She said she intends to speak about the issue of fur to Israeli religious leaders on her trip. "It's almost 2011. There are so many alternatives to things. We can be compassionate in our choices," Anderson said. She said she tries to incorporate her campaign for animal rights during other "Dancing with the Stars" shows around the world. Anderson slammed for donating Playboy payPamela Anderson has been blasted by an Islamic rights group for donating her $25,000 Playboy modeling fee to charity - because the money was obtained through "immoral acts".The former Baywatch star posed nude for the January, 2011 issue of the men's magazine and handed the cheque she received for the spread to Waves 4 Water, a charity that distributes filters to people who don't have access to clean drinking water, in countries including Indonesia and Haiti. But officials from the Islamic Defenders Front are fuming about the donation, claiming it is "against the law of God" to hand the modeling money to charity. Habib Umar Salim, the head of FPI's advisory council, tells Indonesia's Metro TV, "If she wants to be photographed naked, then she is challenging a bigger disaster to happen in Indonesia. It's haram (forbidden)." Pam Anderson donates Playboy payPamela Anderson has stripped down for Playboy magazine for a good cause - the actress has donated her $25,000 modelling fee to charity. The former Playmate and Baywatch star posed nude for the January, 2011 issue, and had the check sent directly to Waves 4 Water, a charity that distributes filters to people who don't have access to clean drinking water. The actress tells TMZ.com: "Waves 4 water are my heroes. They get things done... and yes, Playboy wrote them a check when I shot the cover directly for 25Gs. "I've also donated personally. I wish I could do more. Indonesia, Haiti and Pakistan are all in need of these filters. Spread the word!" Pam Anderson bashed for tardinessPamela Anderson fell foul of British actor Charles Dance after turning up late for their London film premiere on Monday.Dance was one of the stars, including Dev Patel, Ed Westwick and Jermaine Jackson, who flocked to Aqua nightclub in the British capital to launch the short film, The Commuter. But he was allegedly left fuming when the Baywatch beauty held up the evening with her late arrival, which she blamed on a wardrobe malfunction. A source tells Britain's Daily Express, "Charles was furious, going on about how annoying it was that Pamela was so late to her own premiere." According to the report, Dance's fiancee Eleanor Boorman was on hand to calm him and he was smiling again after a chat with his partner. PETA salutes celebs to celebrate its 30th birthdayPamela Anderson posed in a lettuce bikini. Rocker Dave Navarro wore just his tattoos. Bill Maher was photographed in nothing but a baby bonnet. And countless young actresses have gone naked rather than wear fur.Other celebrities have spoken out against factory farming, bullfighting and the use of great apes in entertainment. They've talked up vegetarianism and put down circuses. They've done all this and more for PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The animal-rights organization has long relied on newsworthy stars to help spread its message in a hip, edgy way — its recent "Ink Not Mink" campaign featured nude, tattooed celebs like Dennis Rodman and Tommy Lee. And PETA is thanking the stars at its big 30th birthday party on Saturday. PETA is throwing a party at the Hollywood Palladium hosted by Alec Baldwin and honoring a spate of animal-loving stars, including Anjelica Huston, Bob Barker, Woody Harrelson, Navarro and "Glee'"s Lea Michele. "We're a totally celebrity besotted society. Even if you don't want to look, you have to see what they're up to," says PETA president and founder Ingrid Newkirk, who has enlisted celebrity ambassadors since the organization's early days. "Celebrity compels us to look and listen... They're enormously powerful, and for them to have a compassionate voice for animals is a godsend." Over the past three decades, PETA workers and volunteers, celebrity and non, have significantly reduced animal suffering in everyday business practices. Revlon, Avon and Gillette bowed to pressure from PETA and stopped testing their products on animals. Juicy Couture, Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren and other major fashion houses agreed to go fur free. Nike and H&M pledged never to sell any exotic skins and General Motors ceased using primates and pigs in its auto crash tests. But there's much more to be done, says rocker Chrissie Hynde, a longtime vegetarian and animal activist who was once arrested alongside other PETA volunteers in Paris for protesting outside a KFC restaurant. "To exploit an animal at any time for any reason, it's the amusement of the devil," Hynde says. "And to make profits out of them, or certainly to torture them, it debases the whole human condition." When it comes to PETA, Hynde says she's "at their service always" and happy to lend her famous name to any of the group's efforts. "Celebrities have replaced God in our culture," she says. "If they're the only ones that people will look up to and listen to, then we'll use whatever ammo we've got." Comedian Bill Maher, who serves on PETA's board of directors, praises the group's use of celebrity and comedy in spreading its message of animal kindness. "They're very clever in the way they really use humor. They are savvy with the media," he says. "They obviously attract a lot of attention, and some of it is critical, because they take no prisoners in their approach. I'm glad they do it that way, because I think to defend the innocence of the animals, you really have to go the whole nine yards." That includes having the most recent Oscar host serve as emcee of their anniversary soiree. Baldwin has been involved with the group for two decades, after being introduced to Newkirk and other PETA leaders through his ex-wife, Kim Basinger. "I became a vegetarian to date my ex-wife," says the actor. Baldwin and Maher are among those fighting against factory farming. Maher describes the practice as "probably the biggest single horror that goes on, because more cruelty is perpetrated on more animals in that area than almost anything else." "We're talking about millions and millions of animals," he says. "I think the regular citizen in America is finally becoming aware that the food they eat comes to them only at the expense of making animals' lives a misery while they're on Earth for such a brief time." Progress sometimes comes slowly, Newkirk notes, but it does come. When she first started PETA in her basement apartment in 1980, few people had considered animal rights. "The word vegan was unheard of," she says. "That was someone from Las Vegas." But with the strides PETA has made, the group's two million members and many celebrity volunteers are inspired to work for more social and legislative changes. Newkirk has her eye on circuses and animal parks such as Sea World, which she calls "abusement parks." "The momentum is there. The public sentiment is there. We just have to push against big businesses," she says. "The battle for hearts and minds and consideration and respect for others is where we began our base and where we continue." Even small daily decisions can help, she says: Order a veggie burger instead of a hamburger today. Choose animal-free clothing. And give your pet at home your love and patience. You'll have a team of celebrities behind you all the way. Anderson to film romp with fanPamela Anderson is set to make one lucky fan's dreams come true - she's offering to film a bedroom scene with a complete stranger for a new contest. The former Baywatch beauty, who hit the headlines in the 1990s after filming a sex tape with her then-husband Tommy Lee, has agreed to be filmed frolicking in bed with the winner of phone firm Nokia's latest competition. The short movie, called The Commuter, is to be shot in high definition on the company's N8 mobile handset and premiered in London next month. Another cameo role opposite Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick, to be shot in an elevator, is up for grabs in the contest. John Nichols, head of marketing at Nokia UK, explains, "We wanted to create something very special for the launch of the Nokia N8 that showcases the Hollywood quality of its camera." Pam pokes fun at HasselhoffPamela Anderson ripped into her former Baywatch boss when she joined in the fun at David Hasselhoff's Comedy Central Roast by suggesting the actor is a gay porn star.Anderson, who has been roasted in the past, joined former Baywatch castmates Gena Lee Nolin and Jeremy Jackson for the taped ridicule in Los Angeles on Sunday, and she held nothing back. The actress/model joked, "I remember how nervous I was on my first day of Baywatch because I can't swim, but David was so sweet. He pulled me aside and said, 'Don't worry, I can't act.'" She added, "I really want to work with you again someday, but you know, there is just no role for somebody like me in gay porn." The roast, featuring comedienne Lisa Lampanelli as roast mistress, is set to air in America on August 15. Click here to read part 2 of the News Archive |
