"Phantom Menace" racks up $1.1 million in midnight shows

The "force" was still with George Lucas, as the first part in the six-episode fantasy series racked up $1.1 million in midnight showings on Friday.

The film, considered the weakest by fans of the franchise, is nevertheless on track to have a strong weekend. It debuted in 1,300 screens in its late night showings and will expand to 2,655 locations.

"The Phantom Menace" will likely fall short of the more than $30 million generated by the 3D re-release of "The Lion King" last fall, but it should gross north of $20 million over the weekend.

Also showing some muscle, and appealing to slightly different chromosomes, was "The Vow." The romantic drama grossed $700,000 in midnight shows.

Starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, the Sony film should generate over $30 million this weekend.

Not to be outdone, Denzel Washington's latest thriller "Safe House" debuted at midnight to a solid $543,000 at 1,034 locations. It too should find itself north of the $20 million mark when the weekend ends.

A few more weekends like this and last winter's horrific box office slump will seem like it took place in a galaxy far, far away.

Five Reasons Why The Phantom Menace Is Way Better in 3-D!

So will fanboys return to the big screen? We're thinking, duh. Lucky for them, this is one droid-filled production with no crammed-in new scenes, at least one much-needed alteration and plenty of reasons to feel The Force one more time.

So get those 3-D specs on! Here are five great reasons to check out this Menace:

1. The Podrace: Lucas didn't want the 3-D to be about just tossing womp rats off the screen. We understand the desire to give depth and not just cheap gimmicks, but whatever! Anakin's high-speed deathrace across Tatooine is made for comin'-at-ya excitement.

2. Darth Maul's Double-Sided Lightsaber: The Jedi-on-Sith duels totally pop with richer color and more dangerous blades. Even baddie Maul's dark hoodie gets a thrill upgrade.

3. Space Battles Get More...Space: Phantom has a climax (spoiler alert, from a long time ago) with not one but four epic battles all at the same time. The sight of the endless droid army invading poor, peaceful planet Naboo overwhelms the senses, no matter how many pairs of glasses you're wearing. Trumped only by Anakin's assault on that donut-shaped death star thing.

4. Natalie Portman's Many Wardrobe Changes: Look closely, cosplay gals, and maybe you'll be able to see if Queen Amidala's outfits—constantly switched in between all her political debates and subtle subterfuge—are made of satin or conflict-free cotton.

5. Yoda Looks Alive Again: If Lucas ever replaced the Frank Oz Muppet marvel from The Empire Strikes Back, we would flip out like a certain green Jedi master did in Attack of the Clones. But in the original Phantom Menace, surrounded by computer-generated everything, the puppet looked just plain weird. So this is the first time (well, in theaters, at least) you can see the now-CG Yoda.

But none of that really beats seeing the opening crawl, with the giant words STAR WARS floating through space...in 3-D!

Natalie Portman to produce ABC pilot based on "Scruples"

The network has picked up a one-hour drama based on the 1978 Judith Krantz novel "Scruples." Portman is attached to executive-produce, along with Tony Krantz and Annette Savitch.

The project, which comes via Flame Ventures LLC and Warner Bros. Television, is billed as a "sexy soap set in the late 1970s" that "follows a socialite who, following the death of her husband, seeks to open a fashion forward boutique in the heart of Beverly Hills."

The Krantz novel spawned both a sequel, "Scruples Two," and a 1980 miniseries starring Lindsay Wagner, Barry Bostwick, Kim Cattrall and Connie Stevens.

Natalie Portman tops IMDb's most-viewed list

The movie website released the list, which is based on the number of views received by actors' profile pages, on Tuesday.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" star, who is now No. 3, had held the No. 1 perch for six of the past seven years.

"The Help" actress Emma Stone is No. 4.

"Thor" actor Chris Hemsworth -- the only man to appear in the top 10 for the first time -- is No. 5.

Next up is "Cowboys & Aliens" actress Olivia Wilde at No. 6, followed by Jennifer Lawrence, the Oscar-nominated star of "Winter's Bone," at No. 7. Lawrence cracked the top 100 for the first time this year.

George Clooney, who has received Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for his starring role in "The Descendants," is at No. 8.

Rounding out the list are "Drive" star Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale, whose upcoming film "The Dark Knight Rises" is due July 20.

The number of women on this year's list -- five -- is two more than the number on the 2010 list.

For the first time in four years, no "Twilight" actors are on the IMDb list -- despite "Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" being one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

Kristen Stewart, who was No. 2 on last year's list, fell to No. 12. Robert Pattinson, who topped the list in 2009 and came in third in 2010, dropped to #26.

IMDb Managing Editor Keith Simanton chalked up Portman's topping of the list to her Best Actress Oscar for "Black Swan" and roles in three films in 2011: "No Strings Attached," "Your Highness" and "Thor."

Additionally, Portman was a regular fixture in the tabloids this year, as she had a baby boy in June.

As for Kunis, the "Friends With Benefits" actress's No. 2 spot was perhaps boosted by her attendance at a Marine Corps Ball in November, Simanton said. While stationed in Afghanistan, the soldier asked out Kunis through a video on YouTube.

Pretty Little Liars, Charlie Sheen Top Twitter's Hot Topics in 2011

Both Sheen and the stuff he says runs through his veins made Twitter's list of hot topics for 2011. Sheen, who had a busy year after being fired from Two and a Half Men, is listed as the No. 1 most talked about actor, followed by Macaulay Culkin, Ryan Dunn and Ricky Gervais. His Two and a Half Men replacement, Ashton Kutcher, also made the top 10, landing at No. 8. (#tigerblood is listed as the second most talked about hashtag of the year.)

Two and a Half Men itself was the second most talked about TV topic behind No. 1 ranked Pretty Little Liars. Rounding out the top 5 for television are The Craigslist Killer, Golden Globe Awards and People's Choice Awards.

On the movie front, Thor came out on top, followed by The Dark Knight Rises (which will be released July 2012), X-Men: First Class, Fast Five and Green Hornet.

Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away in March, topped the most-discussed actresses list. Among the others in the top 10 were Black Swan castmates Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman, along with Harry Potter's Emma Watson and The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev.

Despite gaining notoriety as one of the worst songs of the year, Rebecca Black and her tune "Friday" landed at the top of the music list, followed by the likes of Nate Dogg, Gerry Rafferty and Gil Scott-Heron.

Natalie Portman Lands First Postbaby Role

While the Black Swan star has been focusing all her time and energy over the last five months on her little boy, Aleph, the new mom has decided to flex her acting muscle a bit.

So what exactly is she doing?

Portman will be participating in a live reading of the 1960 Billy Wilder film The Apartment.

The event, hosted by director Jason Reitman at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this Friday, will find Portman taking on the Shirley MacLaine-originated role of Fran Kubelik.

Joining the Oscar winner onstage will be J.K. Simmons, Ken Jeong, Jake Johnson, Nick Kroll and Mindy Kaling.

A very pregnant Jennifer Garner did a similar reading of The Breakfast Club at LACMA last month.

Natalie Portman Takes Baby Aleph Out in Hollywood

Natalie Portman and fiancé Benjamin Millepied, who reside in New York City, have already taken their 4-month-old son on a tour of Paris, and now he's getting a look at sunny California.

The Oscar-winning actress, 30, held tight to Aleph, who was dressed for fall in a green onesie, out to a friend's home in Hollywood on Thursday.

The blue-eyed kid, who was born in June, was named for the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

His parents met while filming ballerina thriller Black Swan.

While last week brought us our first glimpse of Natalie Portman's pride and joy in Paris last week—new son Aleph—we still hadn't managed to catch a glimpse of this cutie pie's mug.

Well, the full coo factor was unveiled in Geneva this week, when we finally felt the full force of this 3-month-old's adorableness.

Cameras caught the sleepy little tyke while he was out with his beaming Oscar-winning mama and papa Benjamin Millepied. We'd call him a future heartbreaker, but we think he's already there.

Nearly three months after his arrival on this planet, Aleph finally made his first public appearance on Thursday.

The bundle of joy's mommy, Natalie Portman, was seen taking him out of his stroller in Paris as the two prepared for a little shopping excursion around the City of Light.

And it looks like we're also getting a pretty nice glimpse of the Oscar winner's engagement ring, too!

A baby and some bling. Not a bad way to end the work week.

Rashida Jones' lesbian kissing advice from Natalie Portman

In preparation for the lesbian kissing, Jones tells Access Hollywood she got advice from Natalie Portman, who recently had some lesbian kissing scenes of her own for her Oscar-winning role in "Black Swan."

"I'm friends with Natalie and I asked her [what to expect]," says Rashida. "She was like, 'Dude, it's awkward to make out with your friends - I'm just warning you right now. It's super awkward!"

So how did it shake out for Rashida and Zooey?

"It was totally fun," says Rashida. "I mean, it was slightly awkward, only because Zooey and I have known each other for a long time. It's kind of weird to kiss your friends. But, you know, she's so pretty - she doesn't make it that hard!"

Natalie Portman Offered First Film Role Since Baby

The Oscar-winning actress, who welcomed her son Aleph in June, has reportedly been in informal talks for the lead role in the indie drama Adaline.

The film follows the story of a woman who was born at the turn of the 20th century but does not age since being in an accident. After living her life alone, she meets a man that may be worth giving up her immortality.

Angela Lansbury also stars, according to the report.

Portman, 30, won an Academy Award last year for her role as a mentally unstable ballerina in Black Swan – and met her choreographer fiancé Benjamin Millepied while working on the film.

Natalie Portman Debuts Post-Baby Body While Walking Her Dog

Since giving birth to son Aleph in June, Natalie Portman has been lying low, just as she promised she would.

But on Thursday, the Oscar winner – who appears to have lost much of her baby weight – and her dog Whiz stepped out for the first time together since Aleph's arrival.

The pair kept their heads down as they walked the New York City streets in near darkness. Portman's newly slim frame stayed hidden under a loose oxford and sweatpants, but the actress added a touch of star power to her casual ensemble with some oversize sunglasses.

Production companies backing the project are Anonymous Content, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Sierra Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment. Summit is distributing domestically.

Portman’s manager wasn’t available for comment.

Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed

Their son's name is Aleph, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

So what's in a name? Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, much like alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Aleph is the number 1 in Hebrew and can also be spelled "alef."

Its esoteric meaning in Judaic Kabbalah, as denoted in the theological treaty Sefer-ha-Bahir, relates to the origin of the universe, the "primordial one that contains all numbers."

Portman, 30, met choreographer Millepied on the set of Black Swan, for which she later won an Oscar for Best Actress.
