Upcoming Episodes / Appearances(All listings subject to change) (Private Practice's Episodes In Blue)News, Rumors and Gossip(Click Here to submit news, articles & rumors)Fast national ratings for Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012(2/10/12) "American Idol" managed to topple "The Big Bang Theory's" mighty reign Thursday night, pulling in more viewers during the 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. time period than the ratings favorite sitcom. "Idol" nabbed 16.6 million viewers during its first half hour, while "Big Bang" scored 16.0 million. A small difference, sure, but a big victory for "Idol."For the night, though, CBS still managed to pull ahead with 14.3 million viewers and an 8.7/14 household rating. FOX came in second with 12.2 million (7.2/11), followed by ABC (7.3 million, 4.7/8), NBC (3.9 million, 2.6/4) and The CW (2.4 million, 1.6/2) Unfortunately for "Idol," the reality hit couldn't tear away "Big Bang's" demo crown, because the CBS sitcom managed to just barely eke out a win in the adults 18-49 demographic, landing a 5.5 to "Idol's" 5.2. For the night, though, FOX finished first with a 4.0, followed by CBS' 3.6, ABC's 2.6, NBC's 1.7 and The CW's 1.0. 8 p.m. 9 p.m. 10 p.m. Private Practice Scoop: Sam's Sister Has Arrived!(2/9/12) Sam's sister has arrived!Corrine, played by Tony winner Anika Noni Rose, made a brief appearance in last week's episode when Sam (Taye Diggs) bailed her out of jail after she robbed a convenience store. First impressions aside, she's no common criminal, and despite what the promos lead you to believe, she's not just some drugged out, desperate woman. She's actually mentally ill. "She's bipolar," Rose tells TVGuide.com. "She doesn't know she's bipolar, she's been misdiagnosed many times. No one actually knows what her deal is. She's been drugged for so long and on the streets for so long, and also self-medicating to try to feel better, but it turns out that she is bipolar and they're trying to find a way to treat her." Now that Sam has her in his care, he'll turn to Sheldon (Brian Benben) to try to figure out exactly what's wrong with her. "She's a little skeptical of the diagnosis because she's been diagnosed before and people have been wrong," she says. "She's been given medication before and it hasn't worked, so that's difficult, particularly for somebody who's fighting with a mental illness because the moment you start to feel better, you think you're better." Through this process the siblings will finally be able to reconnect. "They were close at one point, and then estranged; that will be revealed more as the episodes progress," Diggs says. "They're trying to make up for lost time and reintroduce themselves to each other." Because of their new found connection, Sam will be in denial over his sister's illness. "With the people that are closest to you, you don't want to look at the truth," Diggs says. 'It's the situation where it can happen to everybody else but you. In this situation, something obviously is going on with his sister and he just doesn't want to believe it." Though Addison (Kate Walsh) and Sam are broken up, she'll be there to support him through this trying time. "She lives right next door, so she sees first-hand what's happening and transpiring," Walsh says. "She's trying to be his friend and be there for him." Private Practice airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC. Celebs Tweet Their Excitement About Court Overturning Same-Sex Marriage Ban(2/7/12) "NOH8 NOH8 NOH8 NOH8!!!!! My dogs think im nuts for the NOH8 happy dance im doing right now" — Audra McDonaldFast National ratings for Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012(2/3/12) "The Big Bang Theory" beat "American Idol" across the board for the second straight week in their common half-hour, helping CBS score the top spot in total viewers Thursday night. "Idol" grew significantly in its second half-hour, though, and gave FOX a win among adults 18-49.(The "BBT"-"Idol" half-hour numbers are: 16.4 million viewers and a 5.4 adults 18-49 rating for "Big Bang" and 15.8 million and 5.0 for "Idol.") Also Thursday, "The Finder" dropped some from its series high last week, "Grey's Anatomy" was up slightly with its alternate-universe episode and "30 Rock" fell on NBC. CBS brought in 14.1 million viewers and an 8.6 rating/14 share in households for the night, topping the 12 million and 7.1/11 for FOX. ABC (7.4 million, 4.8/8) came in third. NBC managed only 3.6 million viewers and a 2.3/4 in finishing fourth. The CW (2.2 million, 1.5/2) was up a tick vs. two weeks ago when it last ran original episodes. FOX led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.9 rating. CBS was not far behind in second with a 3.5. ABC took third at 2.5, followed by NBC, 1.5, and The CW, 0.9. Paul Adelstein to Direct an Episode of Private Practice(1/26/12) Paul Adelstein is heading behind the camera to direct his second episode of Private Practice, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.Adelstein, who plays Dr. Cooper Freedman on the ABC medical drama, will helm Episode 17, slated to air in mid-March. The 42-year-old actor previously directed the Season 4 episode "The Hardest Part," which saw Pete's mother (Louise Fletcher) and brother (Kyle Secor) come to Oceanside Wellness. "There's a lot of stuff that's been going on in the personal lives of people in the practice that will come to a head," Adelstein teases of the episode he's directing, noting that the relationship between Addison and Amelia will hit a turning point. "There's been some tension there since the intervention about Amelia's neediness and certain things she feels she can share with Addison and certain things she feels that she can't. We [also] get more of a glimpse into Jake's past life, meet some of those people. It's a beautifully written script." Are you looking forward to the Adelstein-directed episode? Private Practice airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC. The series will move to Tuesday nights at 10/9c once executive producer Shonda Rhimes' third drama Scandal debuts on Thursday, April 5 at 10/9c. Fast national ratings for Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012(1/20/12) "American Idol" is back in action, but FOX may be less than pleased with its reliable ratings grabber which, although solid, is decidedly down from last year. Could we possibly have reached the reality singing competition saturation point? On Thursday, "Idol" won its timeslot, but CBS edged out FOX overall with its now locked in Thursday evening blend of sitcoms and procedural drama.CBS won the night with 14 million viewers and a healthy 8.5 rating/13 share in households. FOX was close behind with 12 million (7.2/11), followed by ABC (7 million, 4.6/7), NBC (4.2 million, 2.6/4) and The CW (2.1 million, 1.5/2). In the adults 18-49 demo, FOX managed a win with a 3.9, though CBS was close behind at 3.5. ABC followed with 2.5, NBC with 1.7 and The CW with a 0.9. Thursday hour-by-hour: 8 p.m. 9 p.m. 10 p.m. Salem Joins PRIVATE PRACTICE!(1/16/12) Port Charles attorney Claire Walsh seemingly disappeared from GENERAL HOSPITAL -- and Sonny's life -- but we now know where her portrayer, Dahlia Salem (ex-Sofia, Another World), has resurfaced! "Good morning!!"ABC Orders Pilot for Shonda Rhimes' Period Drama(1/14/12) ABC has ordered production on the pilot for Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers' period drama, Gilded Lillys.Written by KJ Steinberg (Gossip Girl, The Nine) and set in 1895, Lillys follows the opening of the first true luxury hotel built in New York City, along with the family who owns it, the staff who work it and those who stay there. Rhimes has a long-standing relationship with the network whose collaborations include Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and the upcoming drama Scandal. Details on the Grey's Anatomy-Private Practice Crossover(1/13/12) If you haven't yet heard, Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice are doing another crossover this season, and TVGuide.com has the exclusive details on who's popping up where. As we first reported, Private's Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) will venture up to Seattle Grace in the first hour of the crossover during Grey's. She'll plead with older brother Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and sister-in-law Lexie (Chyler Leigh) to help save the life of Erica (A.J. Langer), who, it was revealed in Thursday's episode of Private, is suffering from a serious ailment. Next, Derek and Lexie are scheduled to appear in the Private hour of the crossover, but in a surprising twist, they won't be heading to Seaside Wellness. Instead, they'll stay put, and Cooper (Paul Adelstein), Charlotte (Kadee Strickland) and Erica's son Mason (Griffin Gluck) will make their way to Seattle Grace, which will become Ground Zero in the rush to save Erica. The special crossover episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice are slated to air Thursday, Feb. 16 beginning at 9/8c on ABC. Private Practice, which has regularly followed Grey's, will move to Tuesday nights at 10/9c once executive producer Shonda Rhimes' third drama Scandal debuts on Thursday, April 5 at 10/9c. Fast National ratings for Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012(1/13/12) CBS' new comedy "Rob" got off to a surprisingly strong start for CBS Thursday, holding on to most of its "Big Bang Theory" lead-in and helping CBS lead the night by a wide margin.Other premieres were not so strong. "The Finder" opened to pretty soft ratings for FOX, and "30 Rock," while improving on "Community's" numbers from the fall, had one of its weaker outings. CBS scored 14.3 million viewers and an 8.6 rating/13 share in households for the night, leading second-place ABC (8.1 million, 5.1/8) by more than 6 million viewers. FOX took third with a shade over 7 million viewers and a 4.3/7. NBC (4.55 million, 2.9/5) came in fourth, while The CW drew 2.4 million viewers and a 1.5/2. CBS also led the adults 18-49 demographic, albeit not by as much. It earned a 3.5 rating to top ABC's 2.8. FOX came in third with a 2.0, followed by NBC, 1.8, and The CW, 1.0. Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice Scoop: Which Couples Are "Endgame"? Shonda Rhimes Weighs In(1/12/12) Let the record show: Nobody does TV romance like Grey's Anatomy. So what comes next after mastermind Shonda Rhimes ripped our hearts out and fed ‘em to us with a spoon with the tragic end of one Mr. Noel Crane (Scott Foley)? Well, it seems that no couple may be safe on Grey's or Private Practice! I just sat down with Rhimes herself and can tell you precisely which couples are part of her "endgame"…None! Rhimes tells me she hasn't plotted out who will end up with whom on either hit series. So, if you're thinking you've figured it all out, think again! "You know what?" muses Rhimes, whose new series Scandal premieres April 5 on ABC. "Who should end up with who is not the question for me. It's where they are going to end up as individuals that is more interesting to me than who should end up with who. I'm not really about that any more." So, good news: Maybe different heated shipperdoms can all get along now? Chest bump! As for Private Practice's core (but troubled) coupling, Sam (Taye Diggs) and Addison (Kate Walsh), the verdict is also...still out. "I will tell you that I have not decided which way it's going to go," Rhimes says of Sam and Addison. "Not quite yet. It's fun for me. I get to go to set and sort of watch Benjamin Bratt be amazing and go watch Taye Diggs be amazing and figure out which one. It's been fascinating to do." Rhimes adds, "They are going through a tough time right now and there is also going to be a little heatedness between Addison and Jake (Bratt) which may or may not be Addison's way of trying to get over Sam. They're in an impossible situation in the fact that she desperately wants a baby and [Sam] desperately does not and they've got to work it out…or not." So how long does she have to figure it out? With the Grey's cast member contracts up at the end of this season, the future of the series is unclear, and Rhimes tells me: "I feel like I will write the shows as long as they're interesting to me. When they stop being interesting, then I'll stop writing them. It is not necessarily that the shows will stop going on, you know, I'm not responsible for that decision, that's a network decision, of how long the shows go. But Grey's is still interesting to me, Private is still interesting to me and I will write them as long as they are." Check out Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice tonight, and stand by for more info on Shonda's new daring series Scandal, starring Kerry Washington, coming April 5 to ABC. Shonda Rhimes on why TV has so few African-American leads(1/11/12) Why does network television have so few African-American lead actors? The team behind ABC's "Scandal," the only current network series with an African-American lead, has a few ideas.Creator Shonda Rhimes, who cast Kerry Washington as a Washington, D.C., crisis PR expert, said the country has been ready for African-American leads for years. She referenced Diahann Carroll's lead turn on "Julia" more than four decades ago. The problem, she said, is that "people have failed to cast the actors that they should have been casting." Rhimes and the cast spoke during a panel Tuesday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. After decades of African-Americans leading some of television's biggest shows -- including "The Cosby Show" -- series have increasingly featured African-American actors only in multi-racial casts that appeal to as many demographics as possible. Laurence Fishburne was the key character on "CSI" before he departed at the end of last season, but even his show was an ensemble. NBC's "Undercovers," with two African-American leads, was quickly canceled last season. "Scandal" co-star Columbus Short said minorities have been marginalized on television, and that he hopes Washington's work on "Scandal" will encourage more colorblind casting. "I think there's a way people want to perceive people of color," he said. "This is what they are, this is how they work, this is how we accept them. Which is a completely gross overassumption of people. And I think this show... tells the story of people. It has nothing to do with color." ABC announced Tuesday that "Scandal" will debut Thursday, April 5, after the Rhimes-produced "Grey's Anatomy." Grey's Boss Shonda Rhimes Trades MerDer for Scandal: "It's Like a British Miniseries"(1/11/12) Fans of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, take heed: Shonda Rhimes says her new ABC series won't be more of the same."It's not a procedural, it's not romance-y, there is no MerDer," Rhimes told reporters Tuesday during ABC's winter TV previews, comparing her upcoming drama, Scandal, instead to a British miniseries "full of intrigue." In the show (premiering Thursday, April 25 at 10/9c), Kerry Washington plays a "professional fixer" who formerly worked at the White House and is looking for a new start in opening her own crisis management firm. The character is based on real-life consultant Judy Smith, whose career has included handling aspects of the Iran Contra investigation, the Los Angeles riots and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Rhimes said that because of the confidential nature of Smith's work, the show's stories will be merely inspired by her famous clients. Smith, who serves as a co-executive producer on the show, provides her expert opinion. "I'll call [Judy] up and say, 'What if I have this conservative soldier who's secretly gay and he's getting the congressional medal of honor?' Rhimes said. "She's been a fascinating and amazing resource for us." The Grey's boss added she is neither relieved nor worried about tackling a series that doesn't revolve around, as one reporter put it, people with stethoscopes. "This is just a different story," Rhimes said, adding that the through line in her shows is "strong women and flawed people." Scandal is so tense and un-soap operatic that not only do the characters not have time for love, but they speak at a breakneck pace — an element that drew some comparisons to Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing. "That was about me not wanting the actors lingering in the moments," Rhimes said. "It's a world where everyone's incredibly busy... the pace really serves the story." Fast national ratings for Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012(1/6/12) ABC's original programming is back in full swing after a winter break, but Thursday's line-up only barely managed to top CBS' strong slate of reruns. Still, a win is a win and ABC deserves credit for drawing the most viewers with the return of "Wipeout," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice."The numbers were close, though. ABC drew 9.5 million viewers 6.0 rating/9 share in households while CBS was close behind with 9.3 million viewers (5.8/9). After a steep drop off, FOX followed with 4.5 million viewers (3.0/5). The CW (2.6 million, 1.8/3) in a minor coup managed to top NBC (2.3 million, 1.5/2) with the return of "The Vampire Diaries." ABC also led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.3 rating, finishing ahead of CBS' 2.3. FOX and The CW tied at 1.1 while NBC finished last with 0.8. Thursday hour-by-hour: 8 p.m. 9 p.m. 10 p.m. Five Stars Who Have Extra Body Parts...Including Taye Diggs!(1/6/12) You mean, they're not perfect after all?!It looks like even the beauties and hunks of Tinseltown have their own little quirks, and, for some, that includes being born with extra appendages (we're talking fingers and nipples here, people). Private Practice star Taye Diggs revealed on The Talk today that he was born with an extra finger on each hand (but they got removed as a child, which is too bad because he could have been "real handy"). And it looks like he's not alone... 2. Gemma Arterton: It looks like the gorgeous brunette known for her roles in Prince of Persia and Quantum of Solace has something in common with Diggs. She, too, was born with twelve fingers. "It's my little oddity that I'm really proud of. People are really interested but repulsed at the same time," she told The Daily Mail in 2008. But her "little oddity" departed from her body when she was just a baby. 3. Lily Allen: Women with three nipples?! It happens. And the singer was gracious enough to flash her supernumerary nipple (that's the legit name) on British television in 2007. Ever since, she's been a proud promoter of her minor deformity, letting a Dutch television host touch it and pulling it out during radio interviews. 4. Halle Berry: This should make a lot of women feel slightly better about themselves...the stunning actress has an extra toe! OK, so she's still hotter than the Earth's core (seriously though, have you seen her bod?!), but that's an interesting fact. In photos, it appears that the actress has an extra little piggy next to her small toe. 5. Mark Wahlberg and Zac Efron: You thought Chandler from Friends was the only one sporting a nubbin? Hardly. Two studs seem to also be in the superfluous areola club. These two heart throbs each have a third nipple, although you've probably been too distracted by their abs to notice. And they don't mind it, anyway. At least Marky Mark doesn't. "I've come to embrace it. That thing's my prized possession," he told Rolling Stone magazine. Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice Doing Another Crossover(1/5/12) Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice are doing another crossover episode, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.Following the "If/Then" episode of Grey's — in which Kate Walsh will appear in an alternate reality that sees Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) alive and Addison and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) still married — Caterina Scorsone's Amelia will head to Seattle Grace for an episode slated for mid-February. Details are scarce, but both Derek and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) will also appear in the Private Practice hour of the crossover. During the Season 7 crossover, Amelia ventured to Seattle Grace in hopes of reconciling with Derek. The two had not been on speaking terms since Amelia turned to drugs while grieving the death of her father, who was shot and killed in front of her and Derek. Now that she's getting clean and sober again, the siblings will surely have plenty to talk about. Grey's Anatomy returns Thursday at 9/8c followed by the midseason premiere of Private Practice at 10/9c on ABC. Private Practice's First Episode Back Brings More Heartbreak for a Fan-Favorite Couple(1/4/12) Are Private Practice's Pete (Tim Daly) and Violet (Amy Brenneman) done...for good? The ABC drama returns from its winter hiatus tomorrow night and it looks like Lucas' parents are sticking with their break-up, each splitting their time between a hotel and Violet's house in order to make the transition as seamless as possible for their son. Too bad it's not exactly a seamless transition for Pete and Violet. We've got an exclusive sneak peek at Private Practice's midseason return, which focuses on Pete and Violet's less-than-ideal living situation... Video. Pete's moving out! Yes, Violet's giving him the boot. Well, not really, considering it's her house, but the former couple is having a lot of trouble managing their custody agreement so something has to change. Pete's a bit annoyed when Violet shows up to hang with Lucas during his time with his son, which leads to "the talk" between the two, who are both feeling unsettled with their current agreement. The solution? For Violet to live in her house full-time, leaving Pete to find his own place nearby. The problem? Pete doesn't seem too happy with the idea. Ruh-roh! Raise your hand if you wish these two crazy kids could just work it out! Private Practice returns tomorrow at 10 p.m. on ABC. Audra McDonald Engaged(1/4/12) Audra McDonald is engaged to Broadway actor Will Swenson, according to Us Weekly. The former Private Practice star — no stranger to the theater herself (she's a four-time Tony winner) — tweeted: "Thanks for all of the sweet congrats on our engagement. We're super happy and excited." This will be a second marriage for both McDonald and Swenson. McDonald, 41, was married to bassist Peter Donovan. They were divorced in 2009 and have two daughters together. Swenson was previously married to actress Amy Westerby, with whom he has two sons. McDonald met Swenson, 38, when the two both starred in Broadway's 110 in the Shade. Most (and least) watched shows of fall(12/27/11) Now that we’re in rerun hell, it’s high time to take stock of what we liked (and loathed) from September to December. Below is a list of every network show and how many viewers each one averaged. While these numbers aren’t a key piece of the puzzle for the broadcast nets when they are setting ad rates and deciding whether to renew a series, they definitely help to tell a story of a program’s true popularity.* 1. NCIS (CBS, 21.4 million) *Note: Season averages include repeats. If a program (original or rerun) aired in a different time slot, it is listed separately. Rankings for NBC’s Sunday Night football is also broken up because each half-hour can command different ad rates.
