About Us

The Algoma Kendo Club is located in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada and was established in the fall of 2008 when an opportunity was recognized to introduce the art of Kendo to the Sault Ste Marie community.
The club’s humble beginnings were slow to progress. Yet by way of baby steps we have been growing.  The community has been very welcoming and receptive.
Our ongoing purpose is to provide our community with an opportunity for anyone to learn and practice the way of the sword.

Our club is not a registered not-for-profit organization or charity, however all revenue is turned back into the club to build/maintain our equipment base and pay for administrative costs (i.e.  facilities rental, handouts, insurance, other supplies).  Our goal is to be a fully listed & accredited dojo under the Canada & Ontario Kendo Federation – a governing body at the national & provincial level.

A little about Kendo

Kendo means "the way of the sword". It is a sword based martial art that practices traditions, forms & score points against partners for specific armoured areas.

Kendo originated from kenjutsu, a battle proven sword art that was developed & practiced the the ancient samurai of Japan.

Respect and etiquette toward one another is evident as the roots of kendo are found in bushido - the honourable code of conduct found in the samurai class.

Although times have changed, much of Kendo has remained the same over the last several hundred years.
