This FAQ's list will be updated frequently with the most commonly asked questions.

Q: Is Kendo expensive?

A: Yes - as you progress there are costs for new equipment, etc. Shinai (bamboo swords) are approx $35 each, uniform is approc $150, armour starts at $550. Membership to the club is at a lower cost than most clubs. We are not for profit.

 

Q: Is Kendo difficult to learn?

A: Kendo at times seems somewhat esoteric and contrives. There are many nuances to footwork, stances, cuts, etc that aren't evident to the beginner. It can seem overwhelming at times especially with so many Japanese terms.

 

Q: Do I need martial arts experience?

A: Definitely not. What you do need is an open mind. Often principles for working with swords is the opposite of what you'd expect or have seen in the movies.

 

Q: Is there an age limit?

A: Not really. The AKC doesn't currently accept children as members but is considering this for the future. Kendo is a physical activity and this should be beared in mind.

 

Q: Can I just come & watch a class?

A: Absolutely. Please notify us in advance. We may wish to prepare a class outline that will demonstrate more of what Kendo is.
