The Hayes Island Cafe Effect (HICE) is simple in
concept--three additional background layers each one given a different
treatment, then blended with soft light ; yet it is unforgiving if details
are neglected. Only some subjects are suitable for rendering by HICE. It
generally ends by using the texturizer to give a fabric finish. If the
image is too soft or lacking in edges, the effect will be disappointing
ending with praise of garbage.
I have spent so much time on it that I can HICE an image
in less than one minute. II isn't worth the effort to make an action
because it can be done so quickly and logically. In many cases the CS two
click posturizer does better, especially on faces.
In your case, you faltered somewhere in the SmartBlur
step. I sent you a couple of examples to show you how I think an HICE image
should look--including your own image.

Personal: Aged 72, married with 5 children and 11
grandchildren.
Lives in Brixham, Devon, England for the past 20 years and
been medically retired for the past 18 of them.
Profession: Teacher of Boys Craft Subjects and Related
Design.
Apart from Photography I like to swim, play tennis and
belong to a walking group and I always have a book on the go.
In Photography I have been seriously active since 1983 when
I found that I could begin to afford it. I joined a club in the next town,
Paignton and served it through all its senior offices in time with the
exception of secretary.
I found that I like producing audio visual sequences and
that has been my main but not sole interest in Photography. I am quite a
popular lecturer on the local clubs and societies in this region now - my fame
has spread. The most shows I have given in any one year is 31.
I only rate myself as a good photogapher and nothing
better. I lack inspiration and imagination and the drive to do anything
better at this time in my life.
The club I belonged to is part of the Western Counties
Photographic Association and I was instrumental within that body for setting
up an inter club AV competition and ran it for 10 years before handing over
the reins. For my services, mainly in that department, I was awarded an
A.P.A.G.B. (Associate of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain) - a
'gaffers' award. I was also cajoled by other club members into taking a
distinction with the same body so I have the basic C (Credit) P.A.G.B. (I
know my place)
I joined the PSA 3 months ago but could not come to terms
with non-digital manipulation in the Photo Travel group.
I have been a member of the RPS in the past and served as
regional organiser for the AV group in the south west. I left that
organisation as it was too expensive for one who had retired and there is also
the fact that if you leave the Society you immediately give up any
distinctions you hold.
The PAGB awards are yours for life.
I am now strongly into digital imaging but am no artist.
My physical frame gave up on carrying my Minolta 7xi plus numerous lenses,
etc. so I now own a Dimage A1 digital camera. Just the one 28-280mm lens and
5million pixels.
I also have the usual tripod and monopod but rarely use
them now as the camera has an anti-shake device on it.
I have been learning Photoshop for years as an out-member
of the local region's RPS D.I. group where I pay slightly more for the
privilege.
I have my uses though as I supply the digital projector on
our twice annual meetings. (HP31)
Equipment: I have 2 PCs and one laptop for my shows.
The laptop is an AJP 2.6GB Pentium 4 and XP with enough
guts to run graphics and that is all it does (and playing Freecell!)
My desktop PCs are in a muddle as I lost one earlier this
year. The older of the two, privately built, runs Win 98, 350 Pentium and
was used for anything to do with Graphics and Sound but it is slow.
My new machine, also privately built, has a 2.4GB Pentium
4, oddles of memory, works fast but the graphics card is an ancient one out of
the old machine but I can live with that for the time being. It has now
superceded the old model for Graphics work but also has MS Word and Publisher
plus a proliferation of other software.
I use Photoshop CS (upgrade from 7) and Cool Edit Pro for
Sound files. I can't claim to know either of them in great depth but know
enough to do what I want.
For AV work I use the Russian 'Pictures to Exe' software, a
super programme.
Still attached to the old machine is a scussi system
running an Agfa Arcus ll flatbed scanner that I bought before the revolution
in scanners came about and also a Minolta Dimage Scan Speed F2800 slide
scanner that I have a love-hate relationship with.
I do not subscribe to the fast internet service on the
grounds of a waste of money in my case. If I need to do extended research I
use the library service 3 minutes from my door.
