The AHAA has 3 ApHC & All Breed show dates scheduled for 2002.

Please be aware that there are some major changes for 2002 that may affect your showing plans.
Effective January 1, 2002, only horses with ApHC (Appaloosa Horse Club) registration papers are eligible to show in ApHC approved shows. This means that horses will no longer be able to show in ApHC shows with their ApHCC (Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada) registration papers. So, if you intend to enter the AHAA shows, which are ApHC approved, be sure your horse has its ApHC papers in time for the first show in June.

Because of this show rule change, the ApHC has extended the window for re-registering ApHCC horses into the ApHC for one more year, until December 31, 2002.

A second important change takes effect for 2002 and this is regarding the CPO (Certified Pedigree Option) program (see CPO Program below). Foals born on or after January 1, 2002 must have BOTH parents registered with the ApHC in order for the foal to be eligible for the CPO program. This means that solid coloured foals born in 2002 and after, and the owners want to show them in ApHC shows, the sire and dam, must BOTH be ApHC registered. If one parent is registered with the ApHCC (Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada), AQHA, Jockey Club or Arabian Horse Registry of America and the resulting foal is solid, the foal CANNOT be CPO’ed and in turn cannot enter ApHC shows. The foal can still be registered with the ApHC, but unless it colours later and receives ‘regular’ papers, the solid foal cannot be shown ApHC.

If you have a solid foal born to parents that are both or one is registered ApHCC and you intend to show it in ApHC shows, you will have to re-register the ApHCC papered parent(s) with the ApHC in order to have that baby CPO’ed. If your solid horse was born before January 1, 2002, it does not have to have both parents ApHC registered and it may receive CPO papers.

Remember, membership, re-registration, and CPO applications, blood or DNA tests all take time. If you have horses that you want to show at the AHAA or any ApHC shows this year, you are advised to get the paperwork into the ApHC immediately.

CPO Program - The Certified Pedigree Option Program was established to enable solid coloured, ‘N’ papered Appaloosas to compete with the coloured, ‘regular’ papered Appaloosas in ApHC approved events. To ensure that the solids were indeed ‘Appaloosas’, their pedigree had to be certified by blood typing or DNA testing both parents and the foal. Results are compared and the foal’s parentage is certified to be of these parents.

As well as the testing, the CPO applicant horse is also inspected by an ApHC approved Inspector. Note: an Inspector must be present when the foal’s blood or hair sample is taken. The Inspector compares the horse to the written description on the “N’ papers, noting any required changes. The horse’s cowlicks are recorded. Yearlings and older are tattooed on the upper lip with their registration number. Two year olds and older also have four photographs taken by the Inspector.

Once all these are received by the ApHC and the laboratory results for the blood or DNA tests have certified the parentage, the ApHC issues the horse ‘CN’ papers. The registration number remains the same, only the prefix changes from N to CN. The horse is now CPO’ed and eligible to compete in ApHC shows.

How long does this process take? Depending on the workload in the ApHC office and the testing lab, availibility of an Inspector, and assuming all paperwork is correct, from the date you send in the foal’s registration application until you get the CN papers back, the process will take approximately four months. You can shorten it to about two months by paying extra rush fees.

For more information, contact the ApHC office; or ApHC Inspector, Darilyn McKenna at the AHAA office.
