The Agnes St. Gardens started about 30 years ago with 27 garden plots. The gardens more than doubled in size in 2001 when an additional 41 plots were added. About that time the garden also came under the protection of Saanich Parks when the land was purchased from the local school board. Another 12 plots we added late 2005 bringing us up to our current number of 68 full (20' by 50') plots, 36 half-plots (20' by 25'), and 4 half triangles.
Full plot's are rented for $60.00 per year with a one time membership fee of $10.00. If 1000 sq. ft. is a little more than you wish to take on, half plots can be rented for $30.00 per year. With local land prices what they are, that's an amazing value! Throw in fresh air, vegetables, flowers, and a few new friends and you can see why we love our gardens.
We are so sorry. We've had to cap our waiting list as it has grown to over 70 as the demand for garden space continues to grow in our community.
For those in the Royal Oak area, there is a proposal for a community garden in the vacant land across from the Royal Oak Shopping Centre ( see map ). It has not yet been approved by Saanich , but perhaps if it can be shown to the municipality that the potential plots are spoken for, they may take the proposed garden more seriously. You may also be willing to join them in helping the new garden get started! For more information on the proposed Royal Oak Allotment Garden email: info@sagaassociation.ca .
