We use an "interest-based" approach in helping individuals, organizations and communities to resolve disputes. Unlike "power-based" approaches to settling disputes, such as those typically associated with labour-management conflict or litigation, "interest-based" mediation in most cases generates solutions in a quick, effective and affordable manner.

People engaged in mediation craft their own solutions to the problems facing them rather than having decisions imposed upon them by, for example, a judge or other professional. The mediator helps the participants to identify the issues that need to be resolved, to communicate clearly, and to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. Even if legal proceedings have been started, mediation is available as a means of resolving the dispute, if the parties are willing to at least try to work things out.
