Artist's Statement

I have concentrated on two artistic mediums – collage and printmaking. Paper is my primary art material.

Collage is a deconstruction and reconstruction process with the added bonus of recycling. I can create representational images using colourd bits of paper, or abstractions that are patterns or random geometrical constructs using my print-based proofs and goofs. The process is similar to doing jigsaw puzzles – every piece has its place.

Printmaking allows me to develop more complex ideas, use technical skills and a methodical process in the creation of art. It is a construction or building process – it takes many steps to make a print. It gives me both a finished product and raw materials for other works.

As an artist, I seem to want to say something. I am not content to produce decorative works. I feel that I should be trying to speak with the viewer - encourage them to think about the subject or issue, explore a different perspective, or contemplate an alternative approach. Art is also a learning process for me resulting from researching an idea, utilizing new techniques or pushing my boundaries on how to express an idea. The result is hopefully art that reaches out and touches the viewer.
