PAC Executive Report on Gordon Campbell Meeting

On Monday, December 8, the PAC Executive and School Renewal/Seismic Mitigation Committee met with Gordon Campbell to discuss our concerns regarding the funding formula of the seismic mitigation process; its lack of an integrated consultative process, and our desire to have the best educational facilities for our children that incorporate innovations in sustainable building, site design, green space, and handicap accessibility. We had an open and frank discussion about the implementation and resource problems in the seismic mitigation of schools thus far, as well as the challenge of dealing with multiple institutional players with different levels of responsibility and authority. We received helpful advice on how to proceed. Our first step is to develop a detailed vision of the kind of school the Kitsilano community desires by consulting all its members: VSB trustees and senior management; City councillors and Parks Board trustees; staff; parents; students; alumni; feeder schools; and residential and business associations. Once a vision has been outlined, the process of funding and establishing a project timeline can be addressed. Premier Campbell offered to meet with us again at the end of January to help with our progress.

To this end, the PAC, together with the Kits administration, is organizing a visioning workshop for Saturday, January 17, details to follow. Please have your families join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking and creative process.

The PAC General meeting passed its administrative and gaming budgets at its last meeting. The following requests were declined, due to a lack of funds: $4700 for Field Hockey goalposts; $3000 for Volleyballs and Basketballs; $3000 for the rights and rental music for the musical "Hair". Other requests, such as Home Economics appliances and Weight Room equipment were restricted, again due to the lack of dollars.

With your generous donations, we can satisfy these requests from our dedicated teachers. We welcome all donations, all the time. And it's simple! Follow this link http://kitsilano.vsb.bc.ca/downloads/KitsNOWPoster.pdf

Grad Transitions: Important News from Mr. Mehl

Parents of Grade 12s - Information on Grad Transitions Presentations:

On Jan 5th (the first day back) during H block, we will have an assembly for all grade 12 students, explaining how presentations will be organized. The presentations themselves will take place Jan 19 to 21.

Some students have expressed an interest in alternate forms of presenting, for both music and dance. If enough students request this, we would be able to schedule a session where they could perform prior to their (shortened) interview. But I will have to know by Jan 9th, so I can set up the presentation schedule and advise teachers when to release students.

Please remind your grade 12 student of this assembly, so they are 'in the loop'.

I would like to thank you for your recent support of our annual science fair. The additional prizes allow us to recognize the achievements of more students and help us make the evening more meaningful for all of our grade eights. In addition, I would like to recognize the efforts of Philip Edgcumbe in organizing volunteers and leading those volunteers in the judging of our honorable mention awards. Finally, thank-you to Dr. Paige Axelrood for being available to present these awards. The evening was a great success!

Mark McLaren
Science Department Head

Dr. Andrew Trites presents Beaty and the Beast - The Blue Whale Skeleton

Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.

A free public lecture hosted by the Natural History Society of Vancouver http://www.naturevancouver.ca/events/marine_biology_programs Thursday, January 8, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, Joyce Walley Learning Centre, 1100 Chestnut St.

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC will soon be home to the first Blue Whale skeleton on display in Canada, one of only 21 in the world. Dr. Andrew Trites, Director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at UBC, will give an insider's account of the Museum's recent Blue Whale skeleton dig in Prince Edward Island where the carcass washed ashore. Its subsequent journey west to Victoria, where the rather large puzzle of bones is being pieced together, makes for a fascinating story. Learn about the conservation status of Blue Whales, hear the story of the missing flipper, and smell a sample of whale schmag. Find out more about the soon-to-open Beaty Biodiversity Museum at www.beatymuseum.ubc.ca
