26th Batch of Player Piano Roll Scans

This batch 26 (440 titles) contains a mix of music which should please many people, including some neat popular tunes of the turn of the last century. In particular, some tunes from Wurlitzer 125 and 150 band organ rolls, some performances from British Duo-Art rolls, and the Denishawn School of Dance 1927 series for dance instruction.

This batch also includes about 100 midi files emerging from archiving damaged rolls no longer playable, nor saleable. Modest repairs, sufficient for one last pass, through my scanner, made it possible. They are a first class example of why century old music rolls need to be archived while still possible to do so.

This complete batch of 440 titles are all contained within ZIP files within a single ZIP file. It's contents are as follows:

It is becoming apparent that the need to preserve the content of century old player piano music rolls is being recognized on an ever wider scale, as more people worldwide build roll scanners and capture the content of these rolls from collections in their own community. They are to be commended. Their work is very much appreciated.

Those midi files that are freely available from Warren's site are in "bold" face. Right-Click on the tiny animated icon featuring a speaker, left-click on "Save target as...", and save the midi file to a directory of your choice on your own computer. Enjoy!

If by chance there are others out there inclined to contribute piano rolls to this preservation project, they would be most welcome. It matters not that these rolls might have torn or missing leaders, may have broken or missing spool ends, may have ragged edges, may not have their original boxes or labels, etc. The only real concern is about rolls whose leaders are missing into the music perforations, at which point they have marginal value. I would ask that you contact me personally at smythe@shaw.ca before sending them through, to determine most efficient and least costly shipping both ways. Outside chance someone with a roll scanner can be found "in-country", to avoid international mailing and customs problems.

In recent months, a number of additional roll scanners are coming on-line elsewhere in the world, thanks to the power and magic of the internet. I have the only one in Canada. So, Canadian donors can send rolls to me, while US donors can send rolls to a US address, and so on. No longer necessary to endure a shark attack by Canada Customs. So, please contact me before dropping rolls into the mail.

NOTE: The principle purpose of roll scanning is archival preservation of the content of rapidly decaying music rolls, a most unique slice of musical heritage. The initial scan files, which are the true arcive files, are freely available on request for anybody inclined to consider them as candidates for reasearch or recutting new replicas. The midi files on this web site are emulations and emerge as a by-product of the preservation project and are made available solely for personal enjoyment. They should not be used for commercial purposes.

Many, many thanks to Alan Jackson who built us a complete spreadsheet (in Excel format) of every midi file contained within every batch uploaded from day 1. It can be downloaded by clicking on: Complete_Uploads.ZIP . The current batch will be found at the bottom of the list. Will make it possible to sort in any order of choice, by title, composer, or artist, etc.

Observant users will note a discrepancy between the number of entries on this spreadsheet and the actual number of midi files available. This emerged as a consequence of roll documentation errors within individual midi files that provoked my spreadsheet making utility to ignore them. Yet another aggravation is random single blank spaces in some entries, making sorting more difficult. My apologies. One day I will attempt to correct these minor errors.

If any among our viewers are unable to view or import an Excel spreadsheet, contact me personally and I'll "save as" the file in some other format that you can read and/or import, perhaps simple basic Lotus 1-2-3.
