COURSE Click to view maps of course: SWIM BIKE RUN
Swim Depending on water temperature wetsuits may or may not be allowed, but in all likelihood they will be allowed. In 2004 wetsuits were actually mandatory because the water was extremely cold, but such conditions are rare. In such a case we allow triathlon competitors who do not have wetsuits to race a duathlon instead. The race takes place in a relatively shallow reservoir of water. You will begin on a sandy beach and swim a triangular course well marked with giant buoys. The course is 750m long, which means 1 lap for sprint distance and 2 laps for Olympic distance.
Bike When you emerge from the water, relieved that you have conquered the first and often most intimidating part of the triathlon, you will run a very short distance up the beach to the bike transition zone. After you pry off your wetsuit and put on your cycling shoes and helmet you will run with your bike another short distance to the start of the bike course. The bike course takes you briefly through part of the town, and quickly onto a low traffic highway course. The course is flat, but strong winds sometimes make up for the lack of hilly terrain. The course is out and back, with different turn-around points for the sprint and Olympic distances.
Run You'll return from the bike course to the same transition zone you visited after the swim. There you will park your bike, put on your runners, and head out for the run. You will run out and back along the same course, doing one lap for the sprint distance and two laps for the Olympic distance. You're done! Congratulations. Now you can enjoy the post race refreshments and, if you bought a ticket, a guilt free meal.
