Holy Roller
I first heard about Holy Roller about
3 years ago. The more I read about this old veteran, the more I wanted to build
it. It took me about 2 ½ years to find reasonable reference pictures of this Sherman
as it sits today in Victoria Park in London, Ontario.
After all, what would be more fitting
than a Holy Roller named shermanfreak than to build a Sherman named Holy
Roller.
The bulk of this kit came form the
parts box using bits and pieces from Italeri, Academy, Tamiya and Dragon. The
upper hull and engine deck are from Tank Workshop. Various bits of photoetch
were used once again incorporating pieces from every major manufacturer.
Commemorative signs were produced by reducing pictures of the actual signs and
printing them to scale on decal paper. Markings are from Ultracast. The
groundwork is celuclay covered with woodland scenics turf, the leaves are
various spices, the fence is pop rivets and fine chain painted black. The
brickwork is a plaster cast of a road base I picked up years ago, but the name
of the manufacturer slips my mind.
The finished model represents an Early
production M4A2 Sherman of the 1st Hussars.
Holy Roller had the rare distinction
of landing on D-Day and still being active when VE-Day rolled around.
I hope you enjoy this tribute to a
Veteran’s Final Resting Place.
