Canned Sherman
I spotted a couple of pictures a few
years ago in the Hunnicut Sherman book. It showed a Sherman being prepared to
be mothballed and then shipped to various locations around the world in case they
were ever needed. Using these two pics as my references, and a little license,
I embarked on building one of these “Shermans in a Can”. The base kit for the
build is Tamiya’s M4A3 (105). I built the container using sheet styrene and
structural plastics. Seeing as most of the vehicles being stored were upgraded
to HVSS suspensions, I relegated the Tamiya tracks to the parts box and used
the AFV Club workable tracks. These were better suited to this task as they
contoured to the shapes needed. The dust covers were created using Kleenex
soaked in white glue and water. The dust cover frame was created using solder.
This was a fun build creating
something rarely seen.
