"Men have forgotten this truth, but you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed." -Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Birds can live for a very long time. Indeed, most psittascines outlive dogs and cats, and many can outlive humans... particularly when given a safe, healthy lifestyle inside our homes. Some Cockatoos are estimated to have a life expectancy of up to 100 years! Combine this with the factors of personal economic and social upheaval, as well as our common current transient lifestyle and it can become impossible to keep any pet, and birds are more fragile and can be more demanding than most. We all love our birds, that's why we have them in the first place. If it happens that we can no longer care for them in the manner they deserve, we need to find someone who will give them the care and love we wish we could give them. To that end the SPBS runs a Bird Adoption Service. This service is free of charge and is intended as a service for the bird. We love him, we understand his plight, and we want to help. Please understand that this is not a buy or a sell service... think of it as a special SPCA for birds. Any birds surrendered for adoption will be placed in a good adoptive home and will not, under any circumstances, be sold to the adoptive owner. We don't buy birds and we don't sell birds, we find good homes for birds. We do not judge anyone for having to surrender a bird, we are just glad you want the best for him. Any one of us could find ourselves in the same situation at anytime (say after a bad accident). If you have a bird who needs a
good home with people who love birds, send an email to
