Q PAC letter Dec. 13, 2005 to VSB re their FI expansion plan

Brief unofficial summary of information from the French language review task force meeting Dec. 14, 2005:

Regarding the options presented on the VSB web survey during the VSB open houses on their FI expansion plan:

EFI

In the Kitsilano Secondary area: there was approval for Trafalgar, Tennyson and Hudson, with Hudson to be K to 7 *

In the Churchill Secondary area: there is still no planned expansion *

In the Vancouver Technical Secondary area: Hastings is in doubt, there was approval for Selkirk, Strathcona is in doubt, Queen Victoria Annex/Secord Elementary has been dropped as an option due to opposition.*

* the VSB FI expansion plan does not provide adequate EFI space to meet demand and CPF recommends that this demand be met.

LFI

In the Kitsilano Secondary area: Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth are still under consideration, and Southlands has been added for consideration - this despite recommendation from CPF that this decision be postponed a year, to not provide more LFI than there is demand, and to allow time to explore alternative solutions to address the shortage of EFI spaces.

In the Churchill Secondary area: Henderson or Mackenzie are still under consideration.

In the Vancouver Technical Secondary area: Hastings is in doubt, there was approval for Selkirk, Strathcona is in doubt, Queen Victoria Annex/Secord Elementary has been dropped as an option due to opposition.

Dear Leslie,

Thanks for sending this letter.

With respect to Queen Mary/Elizabeth programmes please note that the development issues at UBC, in which close to 200 elementary and 100 secondary students are not able to attend neighbourhood schools, creates serious planning difficulties for any early french immersion program in either of those two schools.   Given the rate of UBC/UEl housing development and the higher than to be expected ratio of children to households in this area the pressure on UBC/UEL and nearby Pt. Grey schools will only increase over the next 3 to 5 years.  This means that in this area the choice of implementing an early french immersion programme in Q.E. or Q.M. may result in shipping elementary students from UBC/UEl even further off site to schools past Alma.  The best solution would be several new schools out on campus, but we are only to have a renovation to the secondary that might create one new elementary which would not really take away the population pressure problem until 2008 or latter.

Yours,

Charles

To FI school PAC Chairs and CPF Rep.s,

Just checking prior to the next VSB FI task force meeting Dec. 14th:

if during the VSB FI expansion plan recent period of open houses, web survey, and school meetings for public consultation,

-         if any FI PACs did resolutions or letters to the VSB on this matter, in case they were not copied to CPF Vancouver and we are not aware of some concerns.

Thanks if you can let me know if your PAC was active in this way,

P.S. I am assuming this list includes only FI school PAC chairs. If the list includes non FI school PAC chairs, would appreciate knowing for your schools as well, thanks.
