School Policy and Regulations 2004-5

From the Kitsilano Summer 2005 Newsletter:

SCHOOL POLICIES AND REGULATIONS

Parents and students are requested to familiarize themselves with the school policy and
procedure on attendance and punctuality. It is hoped that this policy will improve attendance,
communication and attendance records. Should you have any inquiries do not hesitate to
contact the school.

ATTENDANCE

All students are expected to attend all of their classes.

ABSENCES

A. Excused Absences Policy

Absences will be excused for the following reasons only:
-  Illness
-  Medical/Dental appointments (which cannot be easily
scheduled outside of school hours). Other necessary
appointments (at parent’s request)
-  Religious holidays and special ceremonies
-  Bereavement/family emergency
-  Authorized in-school service, with an administration slip
-  Organized school activities with subject teacher’s
permission

NOTE:
Absences due to vacations are not considered excused absences. School policy does not require
teachers to provide missed work, nor give extra time for assignments and tests. The loss of marks
is a logical consequence of unexcused absences.

Procedure:
When a student is ill, a parent/guardian must telephone the school receptionist at (604-713-8961)
each day of the absence. Within one (1) calendar week of returning to school, the students must
bring a signed note from his/her parent or guardian, which shows the student number, the date(s)
absent and the reason for the absence(s).

The student will have the note signed by his/her subject teachers, whose classes were missed, and
then take it to the school office where the receptionist will enter an excused absence in the
student’s record. This part of our attendance procedure is extremely important if students are too
avoid ‘unexcused’ absences.

A teacher is not obligated to accept a note beyond one week of the student’s return to class. It is
the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed during an excused absence.

ANY ABSENCE THAT DOES NOT FIT THE ABOVE CRITERIA OR ANY ABSENCE FOR
WHICH THE ABOVE PROCEDURE IS NOT FOLLOWED WILL BE TREATED AS AN
UNEXCUSED ABSENCE.

. Unexcused Absences Policy
1. Students do not have the right to make up or hand in work missed
because of an unexcused absence.
2. Consequences will result from unexcused absences.

B. PUNCTUALITY

All students are expected to arrive in class before the final bell to start a class.

LATES

A. Excused Lates Policy

1. Late arrivals will only be excused upon presentation of:
-  A note signed by parent/guardian
-  A signed orange administration slip
-  A medical/dental appointment card
-  An administrative exception

Procedures:
a. A student who has arrived late to class has one calendar week to
provide a note of explanation. The note must contain the student’s
name, and the date and block for which the student was late. The
student will present this note of explanation to his/her subject teacher.
b. A teacher is not obligated to accept a note beyond one week of the late
arrival.
c. It is the responsibility of late students to discuss with the teacher, the
end of class or after school, any work missed as a result of being late.

B. Unexcused Policy

1. All late arrivals are UNEXCUSED until deemed EXCUSED according to
the policy for ‘Excused Lates.’
2. Students do not have the right to make up or hand in work missed
because of arriving late. Consequences will result from unexcused
lates.

Reminder to Parents:

Non-Emergency Telephone Calls to Schools

Non-emergency telephone calls (such as doctor or dentist appointments, hair appointments,
etc.) to the Kitsilano switchboard requesting contact with students will not be accepted. As
a goal, we strive to keep disruptions to class time to a minimum. Non-emergency telephone
calls to students hinder our attempts to achieve this goal. We appreciate your support in this
matter.
