Challenges to promoting  Kits recreational/intramural sports are,  finding gym time, teacher and parent volunteers. Also encouraging students to participate.

Alternative sources of physical activity for students can be found through:

The Kitsilano Community Centre

UBC Community Sports Camps

Examples of other organizations:

The Vancouver Ultimate (frisbee) League web site (for rules and for opportunities to play during school summer vacation):

Private Vancouver basketball organization:

Kitsilano teachers sometimes volunteer to organize and lead weekend overnight hiking/camping trips.

See  'GIRLS ON THE MOVE' programme in the 'Kitsilano Community Centre support for Kitsilano Secondary' special interest group.

Kits recreational sports team uniforms:

Kits recreational sports team members would each purchase their own team uniform and then each member keeps his/her uniform when he/she leaves the team.

A team member parent would help organize the purchase of the team uniforms. The team member parent would collect the money from each team member before placing the order to cover the cost of the order. If the team uniform order is short of time, a team member parent might help by covering the cost of placing the order and collecting the money from each team member after.

Some Kits school sports teams, usually because the uniforms are very expensive, have decided to request funding for the uniforms from Kits PAC, in which case the uniforms remain with the team from year to year. Kits PAC's ability to meet such a request depends on what other expenses are presented to them at that time. Kits PAC did purchase Kits girls hockey team uniforms at one point.

Mr. Mehl in Graphics at Kits has a stylized Haida 'K' available to use as or in a logo for Kits sports teams uniforms - 2008 April.

A Kits recreational sports team requires a teacher sponsor present at sporting events and the teacher has the First Aid Kit at these Kits sporting events  - the  teacher checks with the Phys Ed Department for this kit.

A parent/guardian of a student in financial need is welcome to contact the school and/or PAC confidentially about the possibiity of assistance for athletic participation.

The Recreational Athletics Special Interest group

Proposed PAC Motion:

Just as no school can function without a principal a comprehensive athletics programs that benefits all children cannot function without a director and staff at the district level.

KitsPAC recognizes that Vancouver’s elementary school children need a PE specialist in every elementary school.  We recognize that elementary and secondary school intramural sports are vital if we are to have as many children as possible physically active in a constructive way. We further recognize that teachers need specialized training in order to teach special needs children sports.

None of these options is possible without a staff position at the school board level to coordinate and promote these activities within the school district.

We therefore support the submission of the Vancouver Secondary and Elementary Schools’ Athletic Associations (VSSAA and VEPAA) to fund a full-time Athletic Coordinator, in addition to the existing Assistant position, with a budget for an expanded athletic program.

It is KitsPAC’s position that the job description specifically includes reference to supporting and promoting intramural sports at the elementary and secondary level.
