'Take Our Kids to Work Day' was a great success. At least 50% of the Grade 9 class participated in a wide variety of occupations. Just to give you an idea of the diversity of work places that our students visited, I have compiled a list of some of the parents' occupations/work places:

-    Graphic Design            - Financial Planning
-    Hairdressing            - Teacher
-    Film Technician            - City TV
-    Jewellery                - Real Estate
-    Architecture            - Waste Management
-    Bakery                - Vancouver Aquarium
-    Landscape Gardening        - Nursing
-    Pharmacist                - Dental Hygiene
-    Auto Body Technician        - Set Design
-    Meteorology            - Lawyer
-    Personal Fitness Instructor    - Physiotherapist
-    Accountant            - Massage Therapy
-    Computer Technician        - Librarian
-    UBC - Dept. of Justice, Biology, Institute of Aging, Chemistry Dept.
Forestry Dept., Math Dept. and Geography Dept.

The parents seemed to really enjoy having their sons/daughters with them for the day. Some of the comments from their evaluation forms were:
-    “This is a great idea - it was fun having my son at work for a day”
-    “Highly recommend this program - good for the kids to see how
parents actually spend their day”
-    “It gave my daughter very good appreciation of my work day and also
the length of time at work”
-    “They should have a take our kids to work day every year. Grade
9,10, 11 & 12
-    “ Make sure students get to do this every year, it's a great
learning experience”
-    “Their experiences could become part of a public speaking program”

The students also seemed to enjoy the day as indicated by their comments on the Student Evaluation forms: I particularly enjoyed reading their comments as to whether the experience had been useful to them in their future career
planning:

-    “ Yes, because now I've seen what a registered nurse has to do
working with technology and keeping the patients in stable condition”
-    “Yes, because now I know how unbearable an office job is”
-    “Yes, because I want to be an architect when I grow up. It gave me a
goal in life”
-    “Yes, because I've realized that whatever job I choose,
communication and diplomacy skills are key”
-    “Yes, because now I can make a better decision on whether I want to
go into sciences, using mainly my experiences in the lab today”
-    “Yes, because you have to choose a job you enjoy and also work is
work and not horsing around. Once you have a job it becomes serious”
“Probably, because now I have an idea how to work in the 'real world' “
