Kitsilano Community Centre support for Kitsilano Secondary

September 2004 the principal met with the team from the Kitsilano Community Centre along with our School Liaison Officer, Constable Aaron Cramer.  The Kits Community Centre (KCC) has some programmes for our students beginning soon.  Our goal is for Kits High and KCC to forge closer ties so our students are better supported.  Three of the programmes are offered as follows:

1.  THE BUDDY PROGRAMME is being offered to integrate immigrant youth into Canadian society in a positive, welcoming friendly way.  "Host" youth will help share their knowledge of Canadian culture and entertain the newcomer with a variety of different activities, including: sports, theatre shows, movies, water parks, science world, games, shopping and teach them about work opportunities.
Sign up at Kitsilano Community Centre as soon as possible!

This will augment our in-school buddies programme that Counsellor Helen Ritchie is currently coordinating with our international and ESL students.

2.  GIRLS ON THE MOVE is a programme that is FREE for all female youth ages 11-15.  This is a non-profit recreational programme and includes a variety of unique recreational activities including fitness, sports (individual and team), dance, and also touches on nutrition.  The goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles and create an atmosphere where girls won't feel intimidated by sports or their peers.

The programme starts Wednesday, September 22nd from 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm and is open to all female youth with varying abilities.  It is a diverse program designed to find strengths and interests to encourage students to pursue a positive, active, healthy lifestyle.

If you have a daughter who may be interested in this programme or is in need of a programme like this you can call Christie Wilkes, Youth Worker at 604-257-6991 to be involved in what will be a very positive experience for all.

3. THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME is designed for youth ages 13-16 and will involve not only leaders but those who want to work on becoming a leader.  It will take place in a friendly, forgiving and fun atmosphere where students can laugh at themselves and at the same time acquire skills of a lifetime.

This FREE programme will be great on a student resume as it pertains to future careers.  Sign up fast because spaces are limited.  Opportunities will come out of this programme so you can get that job you always wanted!

The programme begins at KCC Monday, September 27th from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and goes until November 29th.  There will be no session October 11th. Contact is Christe Wilkes, Youth Worker at 604-257-6991.
