JAPAN TRIP 2010-11 ~ Rainer Mehl, Sponsor Teacher
Kitsilano will be heading to Japan again next year. The last four trips were a great success, students had a great time and
many asked about being able to go again!
Last year we had the chance to visit a school on a very beautiful island, where we were welcomed by the Mayor and local
Press, and we also experienced a night a Zen temple, complete with meditation! Kits students made a very positive
impression, and we were invited back again next March Break, so students would only miss 6 days of school.
The trip will include two days at school, a week-end home-stay, the Dutch settlement and Atomic Site of Nagasaki, the
cultural capital of Kyoto, the tame Deer of ancient Nara, and ultra modern Osaka.
For students, this trip is an once-in-a-lifetime experience to spend time immersed in a different culture guided by a
teacher, experience life with a family and attend school in Japan.
Students should be at least 15 at time of Travel, but need no knowledge of Japanese. We will have a number ‘orientation
classes’ in the Fall, give them information on where they can take language classes, as well as a list of books and
movies that will make the experience even better.
The cost of the trip will be approximately $3000, which covers all transportation, accommodation, entrance fees,
insurance and most meals. Students will want to bring some spending money, but should not expect to have too much
time for shopping! If we have an interested group by the end of September, we will be able to book flights early and save
on flight charges.
Sign up now to reserve a spot - there will be a maximum of 19 students able to participate. There will be a parent
information session Sept 28th after the Parent Walkabout.

Kitsilano will be heading to Japan again next year. Each of the last three trips was a great success, students had a great time and many asked about being able to go again! There will be two major changes next year: This trip will not be an exchange, as we have found a new school on a very beautiful island to be our host school in Japan, and as a result we will be travelling two weeks in March, to coincide with March Break, and only miss 5 days of school.

As we will be doing a shorter homestay, we get to see more of Nagasaki, including an active volcano and the attached hot spring town, as well as the cultural capital of Kyoto, the tame dear of ancient Nara, ultra modern Osaka and the famous castle of Himeji. For students, this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend time immersed in a different culture guided by a teacher, experience life with a Japanese family and to attend school in Japan.

Students should be in Grade 10, but need no knowledge of Japanese. We will have a number of “orientation classes” in the Fall, to provide students with information on where they can take language classes, as well as a list of books and movies that will make the experience even better.

The cost of the trip will be approximately $2,800, which covers all transportation, accommodation, entrance fees, insurance and most meals. Students will want to bring some spending money (but should not expect to have too much time for shopping!)

Sign up now to reserve a spot - there will be a maximum of 16 students able to participate, and 5 have already signed up! The first parent information session will take place September 23rd, 2008 and initial deposits will be due in October. For more details, contact: Mr. Mehl at email: rmehl@vsb.bc.ca or phone: 604-713-8965

Japan Exchange Trip 2007-8

Kitsilano has had two very successful trips to Japan.

For two weeks in September, students travel to Japan, see the Cultural
Sights of Kyoto, the History of Nagasaki and the Shopping and
Counter-Culture of Osaka, as well as spending five days with a Japanese
Family and attending school events.

The next trip will be this coming September, after which point we will
go only every two years as we will start alternating with our Japanese
host school.

Students should be in Grades 10-12 in September, do not have to have
any Japanese skills, but should have interest and a sense of adventure.

This trip is an incredible opportunity to discover a very unique
culture, with just enough free time to shop and gather own impressions.

More information is available from Teacher Mr.Mehl in Room 508 or e-mail at
rmehl@vsb.bc.ca.
