A study (reported in March 2004) by Statistics Canada reports that French Immersion students
across Canada “outperformed their counterparts in non-immersion programs
in reading performance.”  In the province of Manitoba, the results for
immersion and non-immersion students were the same. These results were
part of a larger study of reading performance of French and English
language students across the country. Here is a link to the study:

does not account for higher reading performance'.

There are tools to help improve French grammar, reading and writing skills. There are links to bursaries and grants. The website is an initiative under the Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality 2008-2013.

Letter of 2009 May 20 from CPF Vancouver North  to the Vancouver School Board regarding the same lack of support resources for classes taught in French as was addressed in the Kits PAC letter of Feb. 3, 2009. The CPF Vancouver North letter was copied, among others, to CPF Vancouver East and South and CPF BC & Yukon.

Letter of 2009 Feb 3 from  Kitsilano Secondary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) to the Vancouver School Board (VSB) regarding a lack of support resources for classes taught in French.  The CPF Vancouver North Chapter was copied, and the letter was forwarded to the CPF Vancouver East Chapter President, CPF Vancouver South President and the CPF BC & Yukon Outreach Officer.

January 2010 - CPF news for French immersion families - there is concern French immersion programs in BC may need support in the face of budget cutbacks, see related article at:http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Group+calls+parents+take+action+save+French+immersion+programs+from+budget+cuts/2485433/story.html

The Vancouver School Board is looking at a potential budget shortfall of $17 - 36 million, and warns of potential school closures, shifting of FI programs, layoffs, and cuts to special education.

It is looking like a very, very tough situation for schools.

CPF suggests that school PACs and individual parents send a letter (sample) to their MLAs calling for reinstatement of the Annual Facilities

Grant (this money is used to maintain schools), because the loss of this money put a lot of pressure on the entire school district budget, and because all stakeholders (parents, teachers, principals, etc...) are behind reinstating these funds.

CPF Vancouver North is sending a letter.

The following canada.com story from The Vancouver Sun, Westcoast News, June 14, 2008:

"Parents' lobbying saves school from closure"

relates to Kitsilano Secondary in that the Q E Annex K-3 French immersion program feeds the Jules Quesnel 4-7 FI program and subsequently the Kitsilano 8-12 FI program.

Also, the article has comments about influences on the VSB seismic upgrade process.

2008 January, Kits Secondary (dual track FI program) has a Kits PAC School Renewal - Seismic Mitigation Committee regards current VSB and Ministry of Education plans to address the seismic issue at Kits.

JQ (single track EFI program) and its annex, Queen Elizabeth Annex (dual track EFI K to grade 3) are feeder schools to Kits Secondary (dual track FI program).

Seismic and Facilities Review issues that affect the future of these two schools are the subject of upcoming meetings.
