INFORMATION EVENT ON BULLYING – NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES: SCHOOL BULLYING,
GENDER AND
HEALTH – THURSDAY, MAY 6TH, 2010, 5:00 PM, LITTLE NEXT (1716 CHARLES
STREET, VANCOUVER)
The event is free, but space is limited so please RSVP to Lindsay
Wallace at: IHDCYH-IDSEA@cihr-irsc.gc.ca
Bullying research clearly shows it hurts victims, as well as the
bullies. Research also reveals that our gender affects how
we bully and how bullying affects us. High school students across BC
report alarming rates of bullying and peer violence.
These experiences are shaped by gender and other factors like
ethnicity, sexual orientation, and social context. Knowing
this information, how can we stop bullying? How can we make our schools
and communities safer for youth? And, how
can we prevent verbal, social, physical, sexual and cyber-bullying?
Join us for an interactive discussion on these issues!
The expert speakers featured at the Café are:
- Dr. Marlene Moretti, Professor, Department of Psychology, Simon
Fraser University
- Steve Mulligan, Anti-homophobia and Diversity Consultant, Vancouver
School Board
- Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc, Professor, School of Nursing, University of
British Columbia
The event is moderated by Zena Sharman, Assistant Director, CIHR
Institute of Gender and Health. This event is hosted
by the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and the CIHR Institute of
Human Development, Child and Youth Health. The
venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have accessibility needs, please

HOLD ONTO YOUR KIDS: Why
Parents Matter by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor
Maté
A disturbing and misunderstood trend of our time is that of peers
replacing parents in the lives of our children. Dr. Gordon Neufeld's
upcoming presentation at Vancouver Technical High School will deal with
restoring parenting to its natural intuitive basis and the adult-child
relationship to its rightful preeminence. The concepts, principles and
practical advice provided at HOLD ON TO YOUR KIDS will empower parents
to satisfy children's inborn need to find direction by turning towards
them for authority, contact and warmth.
GORDON NEUFELD, Ph.D., is a Vancouver-based clinical psychologist with
over thirty years of experience working with children and those who
parent and teach them. He has a widespread reputation for his ability
to
make sense of difficult and complex problems and to open doors for
change. His insights are in demand by professionals and parents across
the country. Dr. Neufeld is nationally recognized for his work on
aggression and violence among children and youth and appears regularly
on radio and television.
