SCADA, or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition is a general term describing computer systems and their associated hardware and software components that specialize in remote monitoring and control of field-level assets. SCADA can be applied in various industries such as Oil and Gas (Production, Transmission and Distribution), Electrical Generation and Distribution, Water and Waste Water Management or any other application where remote monitoring of an industrial process is required.
SCADA systems are characterized by their flexibility and robustness in the area of remote communication and data gathering. Unlike a process-oriented DCS (Distributed Control System), a SCADA system must be able to handle unreliable communications to field equipment to which it may not have a dedicated link. The main job of a SCADA system is to gather information from many (potentially different) data sources and to provide control distributed capabilities.
