It is my dream that the ignorant, the forgetful and the moderate as well as the omniscient Animorph fans should have a chance to enjoy this new version of the Animorph ending. I am therefore offering my readers a selection of backgrounds. Please choose the one that applies to you.
If you once saw an Animorph book cover and figured the series must have something to do with people turning into animals…
You’re on the right track, but there is more.
The Animorphs start off as a group of five teenagers (Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie and Marco) who walk through an abandoned construction site one night and meet an Andalite (alien-slash-deer-slash-scorpion-slash-four-eyed centaur) named Elfangor. He warns them that Earth has been invaded by Yeerks (parasitic slugs that can wrap themselves around a person’s brain and control the person completely). He uses the Andalite morphing cube to give each of them the power to morph (become any creature they can touch) so that they will be able to fight the Yeerks. Elfangor is killed by Visser Three (the only Yeerk with an Andalite host body and the ability to morph). The Yeerks believe the Animorphs to be a group of Andalite bandits. Later, the Animorphs meet Elfangor’s little brother, Ax, who joins their team.
When an Animorph is in morph he/she communicates using thought-speech. (This is the Andalites’ natural form of communication as they have no mouths). If someone stays in a morph for more than two hours, he/she becomes trapped in that body.
The Yeerks’ greatest weakness is their need to leave their host bodies once every three days to absorb Kandrona rays (Yeerk nutrients). If a Controller (someone with a Yeerk in his/her head) is away from Kandrona rays for more than three days, the Yeerk dies and the host is freed. The Yeerks have an underground Yeerk Pool on Earth, as well as a Pool Ship in orbit, where they go to soak up Kandrona rays.
Jake is the Animorphs’ leader. His brother, Tom, is a Controller.
Rachel is Jake’s cousin. She is the Animorphs’ toughest fighter. Her nick-name is Xena Warrior Princess.
Tobias is the Animorphs’ expert observer. He becomes trapped as a red-tailed hawk. The Ellimist (a god-like being who insists he is merely a being with capabilities beyond human comprehension) restores Tobias’s ability to morph and allows him to acquire his original human body as a morph.
Cassie is the Animorphs’ conscience. She is extremely sensitive and compassionate. She is also a talented morpher.
Marco is the Animorphs’ comic relief. Although he knows how to be serious, his favourite coping mechanism in hard times is to laugh. His mother, Eva, spends years as Visser One (the highest-ranking Controller there is).
Ax is the Animorphs’ alien expert. He lives in isolation from his own kind and is often homesick, but soon comes to care for humans as much as he does for Andalites.
If you’ve read a book or two but have acquired little vocabulary beyond the words “Yeerk,” and “Controller”…
