McKay. Edward
Was born in 1890, the son of James William and Sarah Ann McKay of Hoyland Common.
2nd Engineer on the S.S. Persia, who died of heat stroke on the 29th June 1915 and was buried at Aden.
On the 30th December 1915, the SS Persia was 71 miles south east by south of Cape Martello, Crete, when she was torpedoed without warning by the German submarine U38. The Persia sank in five to ten minutes, killing 343 of the 519 aboard.
(The name of Edward McKay is not recorded as a Great War casualty by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, since his death was not the result of any enemy action)
