The son of Arthur and Hannah Lockwood he enlisted at Birdwell and was killed in action on the 3rd May, 1917, while serving on the Western Front.
Herbert and his brother Charlie, who also died in the Great War, are remembered on their fathers headstone in Hoyland Nether Cemetery - Gone but not Forgotten.
