Gillott. William

Was Born in Hoyland, on the 25th May, 1893, and eventually became a Miner at Silkstone Colliery, and lived with his wife Louisa at Hawcrofts Yard, Platts Common, he enlisted in the York and Lancaster Regiment on the 3rd September, 1914.

He transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the 16th January, 1915 and joined Anson Battalion, and on 28th April, 1915, became part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Dardenelles.

He was reported  missing on 4th June, 1915, and later reported dead.

                               HOYLAND ATHLETE KILLED

After several months of anxiety on account of the absence of authentic news,
Mrs. Gillott, Wombwell Road , Platts Common, has received official intimation
from the War Office that her son, Private William Gillott, of the Royal Marines,
has been killed. The deceased was very popular in the Hoyland district,
and was well known in athletic circles.
