Darwin. Ernest        

The son of Harvey and Amelia Ann Darwin, of Elm Street, Hoyland Common and the husband of Blanche Darwin, of 174 Cobcar Terrace, Elsecar.

He was born on the 14th October 1879,  joined the Navy on the 20th June 1902 and served on many ships including the H.M.S. Hood and H.M.S. Defiance, he became part H.M.S. Indefatigable's crew on the 8th July 1913, and was killed in action on the 31st May 1916, during the Battle of Jutland, when H.M.S. Indefatigable was sunk by shells from SMS Von der Tann.

"The ship sank quickly, all but three of her crew of 1,017 were killed, leading Seaman Falmer and Elliot, and Signalman John Bowyer. According to one of the survivors Captain Sowerby survived the sinking, but died of his wounds before he could be rescued".
