The son of James and Lucy Chase of 4, Royston Hill, Hoyland he was born in Hoyland, lived in Barnsley and enlisted at Birdwell on the 8th September 1914. He joined the Expeditionary Force France on the 27th August 1915, he was wounded and returned home on the 7th July 1916, returning to France on the 23rd September 1916, where he was wounded again.
He died of wounds on the 8th January, 1917, while serving on the Western Front.
