Land and Buildings:
#1 Firehall, 760 North Road,
is a 6000 sq. ft concrete block building situated on 11 acres of
land
donated to the the newly formed Fire Improvement District in 1960's
by James Rollo, one of the first volunteer firefighters. It was built
largely by volunteer efforts in 1969/1970. This firehall has
3 long truck bays, breathing air compressor/storage/tool rooms,
washrooms, gym and kitchen on the ground floor and an upstairs meeting
room, offices and radio room. The hall has seen various small
additions, changes and improvements over the years.
#2 Firehall, 2400 South Road
2400 sq. ft. steel building on one
level, erected in 1980, shortly after the south end of Gabriola
opted
into the Fire District. #2 Firehall sits on approximately 1 acre of
land which is
leased
to the Improvement District by the Dept. of Highways. #2 Firehall has
three truck bays, a meeting room with kitchen
Various small parcels of land on Dept. of Highways right of ways
around the island have been granted to the Improvement District for the
location of firefighting water storage tanks.

Truck 4:

4 CAF (compressed air foam) truck, with 300 gallon tank, and medical
supplies. The Fire Chief and Duty Officer use this vehicle on a
daily basis during the summer, to ensure the quickest possible
response
to a callout. This truck also has an attachment for a snow plow
for winter clearing.
Truck 5:
1050
gpm pumper with CAF system and 2000 gallons of water and firefighting
equipment. This truck also carries our rescue air lifting bags
and cribbing, as well as the JAWS of life extrication equipment.
No. 5 is our first response vehicle for everything except a basic
medical call.
Truck 7:
Fire
Chief's / Duty Officer's response vehicle. Carries a thermal
imaging camera (TIC), medical
equipment, fire extinguishers, and other equipment.
Truck 11:
1500 gallon water supply truck with PTO 400 gpm pump.
Truck 12:
Medical equipment, low angle rescue equipment, breathing air cascade
system.

LORETTE’S HYDRANT (1):
- Location: End of Lockwood Road, on
Lorettes property.
- Source: McGuffy Swamp - approximately 800 gpm flow rate

CAMP MIRIAM HYDRANT (1):
- Location: In front of 835 Berry
Point Road
- Source: Pond - approximately 800 gmp flow rate.
- Quantity: 500,000 + gallons
- Camp Miriam was required to upgrade their water supply for the
firefighting as a requirement of a building permit.
- Was installed by fire department. The GPFD agreed to install
piping and hydrant at our cost to satisfy the building inspector, and
the community need for a water source in this area.
ROOKS HYDRANT (1):
- Location: Ferry line up turn around.
- Source: lake on Rook’s property - approximately 600 gpm
flow rate.
- Quantity: 1,000,000 + gallons
- Fire department installed 500M of 10" pipe and hydrant from lake
built by Mike Peacock.
BUTTERCUP ROAD (1):
- Location: Approximately 100 m from
North Road on left side of Buttercup Road - small suction standpipe.
Minimal expense to install.

MARTIN ROAD (1)
- Location: Martin Road - small
suction standpipe. Minimal expense to install.

ROLLO PARK:
- RDN property. No infrastructure by
fire department. No contract. No maintenance.
- Quantity: 100,000 + gallons
- Requires pump to supply tanker.
GABRIOLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HYDRANT
(1):
- Approximately 200 gallons per
minute flow rate.
- Quantity: 25,000 gallons
- SD68 maintenains.
TANKS (2 sites - 3 tanks):
- Location: Ricardo / Whalebone.
- Source: Elevated water tanks - currently upgrading to ground
level filling and dumping for improved firefighter safety.
- Quantity: Ricardo: 5054 gallons / Whalebone: 11,170 gallons
- These properties belong to the RDN.
- GFPD maintains.
DESCANSO VALLEY DRIVE:
- Location: Half way down Descanso
Valley Drive.
- Source: Canal - no infrastructure / no maintenance.
- Quantity: 1,000,000 + gallons.
- Requires pump to supply tankers.
WINDECKER’S POND:
- Location: Off corner Seawind and
North Road.
- Source: Pond
- Quantity: 50,000 gallons.
- No infrastructure / no maintenance.
- Requires pump to supply tankers.
INGMAR’S POND:
- Location: 481 Spruce Road.
- Source: Pond
- Quantity: 25,000 gallons.
- No infrastructure / no maintenance.
- Requires pump to supply tankers.
FOLKLIFE VILLAGE POND:
- Location: Back of Folklife Village.
- Source: Approximately 80,000 gallon pond with standpipe.
- This system was installed as a requirement of B.C. Building
permit for this location. This exempted them from needing to install a
sprinkler system in the building.
- Owners responsibility to maintain.
GABRIOLA GARDEN HOMES:
- Location: 500 Argyle Lane.
- Source: Approximately 20,000 gallons connected to potable water
supply for this location.
- Approximately 250 gpm.
- Was installed as a backup water supply to activate sprinkler
system in event of a failure of sprinkler electric pumping systems.
COAT’S HYDRANT (1):
- Electrically operated.
- No longer available to us after failure ro reach an agreement
with Clyde Coats.
- In event of a severe emergency, we will cut the lock off and use.
FIRE HALL NO. 1:
- One tank - 7160 gallons.
- Usually left empty, as the school and Rook’s hydrant are
conveniently located and don’t require refilling.
FIRE HALL NO. 2:
Two tanks. - Left empty due to extensive corrosion. Tank
was never epoxy painted inside as were other tanks at installation.
- Davison’s hydrants located close by make these tanks
redundant.
