Hello Everyone,

Tomorrow is our 11 month anniversary of coming to Ethiopia. In honour of approaching one year in
this country, I have composed yet another top ten list.

The Top Ten Things I Miss About Canada (Apart from Family and Friends)

Taking baths.

Camping in the bush - you can go camping here, but transport is very
complicated, and there aren’t very many "wilderness" areas left.
8
CBC Radio - we listen to the BBC World Service quite a bit and I now know a
frightening amount about British domestic politics, but it’s just not the same
as the good old CBC. (Who is hosting "As it Happens" these days?)
7
Bookstores - we have access to quite a lot of books here, but there are no
bookstores to speak of, even in Addis.
6
Orderly, polite line-ups - My Canadian self just can’t get used to the pushing and
shoving; I always take it personally!
5
Various food items - cheese, sushi, apples, milk, Doritos, ice cream, etc, etc.
4
Understanding what is said at work - as you can imagine, not understanding
90 % of what is said socially or at meetings puts you at a considerable
disadvantage for understanding the bare workings of the college, let alone the
subtleties of office politics.
3
The Seawall / the ocean / a lake too big to see across
2
Having a reasonable class size - marking 65 X 3 of anything is a big undertaking, as is
learning 65 X 3 Ethiopian names!

Walking around in public without being watched/stared at
("I saw you yesterday. You were eating supper at 'Logita'. Yes, and you were
drinking beer...") It’s as bad as living in Echo Bay!

Before you feel too sorry for me (our life here is actually quite luxurious), next week,
I’ll send my top ten things I don’t miss about Canada. Any guesses what will
be on that list?

Welcome to the family Isaac Fox Tamblyn!

ps - the postcard collection is always open to new additions!
