SPC Representatives

http://gfx1.hotmail.com/mail/w4/pr01/ltr/i_safe.gif

For the second time in a row, we did not have quorum at our last PAC meeting. As a result, we were unable to have a formal election for the parent representatives to the School Planning Council (SPC). Given the vital work this committee must undertake this term, especially in addressing declining graduation rates, parents decided to nominate the parent representatives and to have them formally elected at the next PAC meeting on February 3. The parent representatives are: Lisa Hererra (Executive member), Thomas Winkler and Wyeth Wasserman.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

On Feb 3rd between 1:30 and 3:30
all Grade 12 students will be presenting their Graduation Transitions Plans to teachers, students and (we hope) parents. To this effect, we would like to invite parent volunteers to come celebrate the Grade 12's success with us. We are looking for up to 80 parents to help create the 40 interview panels that will listen to all 320 Grads in these two hours. This is a great way to find out more about the Grad Transitions Program all students have to complete before graduation.

For more information and/or to volunteer, please contact Mr.Mehl rmehl@vsb.bc.ca

Apprenticeship Program

http://gfx1.hotmail.com/mail/w4/pr01/ltr/i_safe.gif

Two facts - the average age of a beginning apprentice in BC is 27 and a huge number of "baby boomer" trades people will retire over the next 10 years.

Reality - theT province of BC already has a shortage of skilled trades people, and the retirements will increase that shortage.

The Ministry of Education decided to team up with the Industry Training Authority to encourage high school students to begin their apprenticeship at 15, 16, 17, or 18. Those students who "earn while they learn" (under the guidance of a qualified tradesperson) are eligible to gain high school credits for part of their paid employment. A student must find employment on his/her own. The school district will facilitate the paperwork involved in indenturing the apprentice.

The student earns 4 high school credits for every 120 hours worked, to a maximum of 16 credits for 480 hours. This is equivalent to 2 grade 11 courses and 2 grade 12 courses (a 'typical' high school student takes 8 courses per year). The work can be done evenings, weekends, and on school holidays. Sometimes a student will go to work every-other-day (Day 2), providing all academic courses can be organized for the "other" day (Day 1).

Secondary school apprentices who are still working in their trade 5 months after high school graduation are eligible for a $1000 scholarship, which they can use towards tools or the required post secondary training. There are financial incentives for employers in certain Red Seal trades.

The contact teacher at this school is Julie Bond at jbond@vsb.bc.ca. Interested students are encouraged to book an appointment to further discuss opportunities and procedures. The school district teacher responsible for SSA is Ms Wendy Gilmour. She can be reached at 604.713.4470 or wgilmour@vsb.bc.ca.
