The Vancouver Board of Education Committee II (Planning and
Facilities) met on Tuesday, June 22 to review the plans for the seismic
upgrade of Kitsilano Secondary and to hear comments from stakeholders,
such as teachers, students, parents, community groups and concerned
neighbours. After hearing from the various delegations, the Committee
passed the following motion: "IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT the Board of
Trustees confirm Kitsilano Secondary Renewal Concept D2 as the
preferred development option and authorize staff to complete a project
definition report requesting Ministry of Education finalization of a
capital project funding agreement."
The VSB Board of Trustees will meet on Monday, July 5 to vote on this
motion.
| Special PAC Meeting, Wednesday, May 26 | |
There will be an extraordinary PAC meeting on Wednesday, May 26,
from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in the third floor staffroom to discuss the
School Growth Plan for 2010-11, which sets Kitsilano's educational
goals, and the KSPT (Kitsilano School Planning Team) report on the
status of the school renewal/seismic upgrade plans. Updated materials
are available at this CitySpaces Kits link (double click

Prior
to
the
December
break,
the
Kitsilano
Project
Team
produced
six
design
concepts for the renewal of Kitsilano Secondary, with
Concept D the
recommended plan. Since then, design
option
D has been further refined and was distributed to the KSPT
on
Wednesday for discussion at its next meeting on Tuesday, January 19.
We
strongly
encourage
all
parents
to
access
the
materials
and
forward
feedback
to
kitspac@hotmail.com.
All feedback will be directed to James Burton and
Jean
Gordon, the parent representatives on the KSPT.
Please encourage your students to inform themselves as well. The KSPT
student
representatives have formed a Facebook group (Kitsilano Seismic
Upgrading) as a
discussion platform, as well as to receive student feedback.
Parents at the recent PAC meeting were informed that an Open House
is
currently scheduled for Tuesday, March 2 from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. in
the gym
for school and community feedback.
At our October 14 PAC meeting, Patti Bacchus, Vancouver Board of
Education (VBE) Chair and liaison trustee for Kitsilano Secondary,
outlined the proposed Project
Charter
for the second phase of Kitsilano's school renewal.
CitySpaces Consulting, the same firm that helped facilitate last
February's Visioning Event, has been engaged as Project Managers of
this process.
In brief, there are three committees that will liaise with each other:
the Kitsilano Concept Planning Steering Committee (KCPSC) as
the Project Authority, comprising VBE senior management, Kitsilano
Principal Chris Atkinson, and Earl Strueby, Planning Officer, Ministry
of Education; the Kitsilano School Planning Team (KSPT) as
Project Advisors, formed by Chris Atkinson, two PAC representatives,
two Teachers, two Students, one Support Staff representative, and one
member of the Planning Steering Committee; and the Project
Consultant Team with CitySpaces and an architect, structural,
electrical, mechanical and geotechnical engineers and a quantity
surveyor. CitySpaces will also facilitate KSPT meetings.
A motion was passed that KitsPAC welcome the invitation to participate
on the KSPT and recommend to the VBE that representatives from the
Kitsilano community, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, and
the City of Vancouver be included on the KSPT from the outset to ensure
the efficiency of this second phase of Kitsilano's renewal.
To this end, KitsPAC has written to Mark
Dale, Assistant Secretary of Treasurer - Facilities, as well as to Patti
Bacchus
and
Allan
Wong, Trustee and Chair of Committee II.
Two parent representatives were elected to the KSPT: James Burton, PAC
Chair; and Jean Gordon, a parent of a Grade 8 student. The first
meeting is on Thursday, October 29.
