PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING 13 October 2010

2.04 Principal’s Report – Chris Atkinson
- School Leaving Ceremony will be at Orpheum
-funding in place for Grad
-looking for volunteers for Grad process
-June 15th currently scheduled for Grad (Provincial next day – will
look at
changing Grad date)
-Teacher’s being organized into “Professional Learning Communities”.
Bringing staff together to work on departmental goals. Each department
has
identified a goal.
-November 3rd is Grade 9 take your child to work day

2.05 Teacher’s Report – Al Sarna (Head of Mathematics Department)
-has been 5 or 6 years since he has been asked to present to PAC
-9 staff in Math Dept. 3 are new.
-new staff to be buddied up to learn how system works at Kits.
-Math department not textbook driven. Use Unit approach and take
advantage of a variety of resources available.
-Department does annual course reviews and Grade coordination.
-collectively put together exams and midterms for each grade. Teachers
have
to agree on each question.
-have Enriched math for grades 8-11. Not for Grade 12. Grade 12 has
Calculus and Advanced placement courses.
-Math contests at every level.
-use Waterloo Series – more geared to Math 12 cirriculum.
-extra help available by various different methods
-Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 -4:30 Perr tutoring is available.
-all of assignments and outlines are online.
-marks given out after each unit test.
-teachers can go over tests with parents and students at the school.

2.06 SACY – Maggie Mooney
- SACY focus is drug and alcohol use and abuse prevention
-started about five years ago
-important for kids to feel connected
-need strong connection with parents.
-four streams (STEP Program):
youth stream
parent stream
community stream

-STEP program and alternative to suspension. 3-day program.
-SACY does workshop “Building Bridges with your Teens.” Can contact
through kitspac@hotmail.com.
-“Capacity Café” – brings parents together with kids from other
schools.
2.07 Treasurer’s Report – Cathy Goodban
-school has been allocated just over $30,000 in Gaming Funds.
-review of requests for funds from teachers and clubs, etc.
-have been able to meet almost all requests this year.
-Athletics would like an additional $4,200 for weightroom equipment.
-School would like $1000 for beautification of school for spring Fine
Arts
Night.
-school purchasing “Turn-it-In” software. Anti-plagiarism software but
also
useful research tool.
- Motion: “PAC moves that the $1,000 for beautification for Fine Arts
Night be
shifted from Wish List into Admin Account. Pac passes the budgets for
the
gaming and Admin accounts as put forward.”

2.08 Canadian Parents for French (CPF) Report – Lesley Wright
- 2 new volunteers have come forward to take over heading CPF role for
school.
-2 new volunteers have also come forward to take over the updating of
the
web site.
