Usually Kits
competitive sports team members each purchase their own team uniform
and then each member keeps his/her uniform as a souvenir when he/she
leaves the team.
Usually a team member parent helps organize the purchase of the team
uniforms. Usually the team member parent collects the money from each
team member before placing the order to cover the cost of the order. If
the team uniform order is short of time, sometimes a team member parent
helps by covering the cost of placing the order and collecting the
money from each team member after.
Some Kits school
sports teams, usually because the uniforms are very
expensive, have decided to request funding for the uniforms from Kits
PAC, in which case the uniforms remain with the team from year to year.
Kits PAC's ability to meet such a request depends on what other
expenses are presented to them at that time. Kits PAC did purchase Kits
girls hockey team uniforms at one point.
Mr. Mehl
in
Graphics at Kits has a stylized Haida 'K' available to use as or in a
logo for Kits sports teams uniforms - 2008 April.
Note: the 2009-10 Kits Junior Ultimate team did not get their own team
uniforms organized, they made it to provincials, and Mr. Coutts,
Athletic Director, had multi-purpose Kits team shirts to loan them for
the provincial tournament.
Students
on
a
school
sports
team
must
each
pay Kitsilano School money for
athletic
fees and, if the team has qualified, for the cost of
provincials,. The fees are collected by the team coach. A
parent/guardian of a student in financial need is welcome to contact
the school and/or PAC confidentially about the possibility of
assistance
for athletic participation.
A Kits
school sports team requires a teacher sponsor present at sporting
events and the teacher has the First Aid Kit at
these Kits sporting events - the teacher checks with the
Phys Ed Department for this kit.

2007-8), and practices (Mondays and Wednesdays for 2007-8) and
games (Fridays for 2007-8) in the spring.
For 2007-8: City Championship tournament May 9 &10,
Provincial Championship tournament May 24 & 25
Students on the team must each pay Kitsilano School money for athletic
fees and,
if
the
team
has
qualified,
for the
cost of
provincials. For 2007-8 this is $30 each and
is collected by the coach.
At ultimate
frisbee tournaments, after each game, each team awards a player on the
other team a 'spirit' award. After a final match, each team does a skit
type cheer for the other team.
Ultimate frisbee
tournaments provide an opportunity for Kits players to gain experience.
A Kits ultimate team usually participates in the annual early April
"Huckin'
for Hearts" tournament in Richmond, BC that raises money for the Heart
and Stroke Foundation of BC and the Yukon ('huck' is an ultimate sport
term):Kits played April 2008. In April 2010 "Huckin' for Hearts" was
not held due to not getting sponsors due to the economic downturn. http://www.huckingforhearts.ca
The Kits senior ultimate team usually participates in the annual late
April 'Spring Reign' tournament at Skagit River Park
in Burlington, WA, about a
one-hour drive north of Seattle. This is a
Saturday/Sunday event and the team stays overnight Saturday at a
Burlington/Mount Vernon hotel with their coaches and volunteer parent
chaperones.
Spring Reign is the largest youth ultimate tournament in the
world!
Spring Reign is the premier opportunity for youth to play two days of
high-quality co-ed ultimate! There are multiple divisions to
accommodate various skill levels. With teams from Washington,
Oregon,
California, British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, and beyond, this
tournament has some of the best competition in the Northwest! Kits
senior played April 2009 and April 2010. http://www.discnw.org/events/SpringReign.html As of 2010, In
order to participate in 'Spring Reign' in Washington State, parents of
players must sign the following waiver about the risks of
sports concussions. The waiver is part of a new law in Washington State. http://www.discnw.org/youth/docs/DiscNWYouthWaiver.pdf About the new law: http://www.discnw.org/youth/lystedt.html

The 2007-8 Kits
junior ultimate team shirts were ordered through Gaia (Vancouver) http://www.gaiacustom.ca
and the cost was $35.50 each, including a share to cover the cost of
the coach's shirt. Next time explore ordering through Five Ultimate
(Washington State) http://fiveultimate.com
as they may have a better offer. Note: as of April 2009, Gaia is
experiencing financial difficulties and has 'temporarily' suspended
operation.
Kits Logo for junior ultimate
team shirts 2007-8
The Kits Junior
ultimate team shirts usually have the school name Kitsilano on them.
The Kits Senior ultimate team shirts usually have a fun name on them
which is part of the spirit of the sport of utimate frisbee.
To borrow a
rain/sun shelter tent from Kits Athletics for a Kits
athletic team event, a team coach or parent volunteer can e-mail a
request to the Kits Athletic Director, Mr. R. Coutts at rcoutts@vsb.bc.ca
PAC purchased a
second sun/rain shelter tent for Kits
Athletics in October 2009. The thought was the shelter could be used
that autumn by ie. soccer teams. The athletic department had an old
blue
rain/sun shelter
(the clamps on the old blue shelter sliding legs are not opening and
closing well).
Two shelters are needed for times like the provincial ultimate 2 day
tournament where both a junior and senior team can be playing. The
shelters are used by all Kits athletics teams, ie. rugby, soccer,
ultimate. The new shelter came with a wheeled carry case and optional
tent sides.

The

logo
work
was
ordered
from
DPI
Digital People Inc.
(Contact: Ondrej Barcak), 1920 Columbia Street, Vancouver, BC, V5Y 4A2,
604-734-5344 (donated by a parent - cost $133 for 5 $26 panels ( 1 sewn
onto
each side of tent and 1 on carry case, in part to ensure if parts
forgotten on
a field, they might be returned to Kits)). The tents were taken to (and
from)
DPI and they arranged to make the logo panels and have them sewn on the
equipment. Note that for a new tent not yet installed on the frame,
just the
tent needs to go to DPI. The Logo on the 4 sides of the tent is 8
inches high.
The logo on the carry case is smaller.
Note:
in
the
past Kits Athletics have also used Signmaster, Clark Drive,
Vancouver, BC, V5N 3G8 604-874-2722
Notes re set up/take down of tent. When pulling open and pushing
closed, the
accordion like frame slides up and down the four corner poles - be
careful
fingers do not get pinched. To open, have one person on each of four
corner
poles and pull apart to open. When accordion like frame fully open, set
top corner
pull pins. Then clip elastic strap hook to accordion frame on each of 4
sides.
Then raise tent on sliding legs and set height clips on second hole up
(use at
higher position to avoid people reaching up to lean on the rafters).
Reverse
procedure to close.
Logo used was the same as that obtained from Mr. Mehl for the junior
Kits ultimate team uniforms 2007-8.

The Recreational Athletics Special Interest group
Proposed PAC Motion:
Just as no school can
function without a principal, a comprehensive
athletics
programs
that
benefits
all
children
cannot
function
without
a
director
and
staff
at
the
district
level.
KitsPAC recognizes that
Vancouver’s elementary school children need a PE specialist in every
elementary
school.We recognize that elementary and
secondary school intramural sports are vital if we are to have as many
children
as possible physically active in a constructive way. We further
recognize that
teachers need specialized training in order to teach special needs
children
sports.
None of these options is
possible without a staff position at the school board level to
coordinate and
promote these activities within the school district.
We therefore support the
submission of the Vancouver Secondary and Elementary Schools’ Athletic
Associations (VSSAA and VEPAA) to fund a full-time Athletic
Coordinator, in
addition to the existing Assistant position, with a budget for an
expanded
athletic program.
It is KitsPAC’s
position that the job description
specifically includes reference to supporting and promoting intramural
sports
at the elementary and secondary level.
