![]() DOUG FAIRES, CALGARY, CANADA |
ABOUT DFI was born in Calgary, Canada on a New Years Eve at 4 pm. Perhaps I wanted to make it for dinner and then the party. Seemed to have kept that philosophy of getting up late and going all night. Taught myself guitar, as a teen in BC in the hippy sixties. Recorded my own songs on a Phillips sound-on-sound tape machine at 18 and still have the inspiration to do it.Moved back to Calgary and got married by 21. Jammed with a lot of people. Even had a band or two. That led to my interest in recording higher-end. Took recording engineering in Calgary at the Sundae Sound Studio around 1984, then (as I like to say), became part of the furniture. Worked my way up to second engineer. Gained owners' blessings to pursue my own material on down-time, while the studio was in it's hayday. You can hear some of that material on the music page.
Left on a hiatus for too long and lost my way back, I guess. Somewhere along the line, the camera became an artistic outlet. Was broke like any artist and worked around and bummed around far too much. It's not healthy but it's a character builder. Single parent to my first son, Casey, close friends and survivors. Met a lyricist, Susan Tarn Whalen while working in Black Diamond. We wrote and recorded together for about 10 years until her passing in 2005. I put down my guitar and used a computer for artistic outlet until 2010. Now it's time to go back to recording. Photos with some friends and colleagues:
THANK YOU for your interest.
