Links
Below
are links for youths, parents,
grandparents, or guardians, and volunteers. We also
will compile links that non-profit organisations will
find useful. This page will continue to grow as our
members find and submit more links.
Links
for Organisations (& volunteers)
BC
Gaming Grants
The BC Government website has information on funding
for organizations and walks you through the application
process. The Gaming
Control Act regulates the funding. In addition,
the United
Way also has Grant
Applications and information. The Royal Bank of
Canada (RBC) also has several links
for non-profit organizations, including a FAQ
on funding from RBC.
BC
Society Act
Incorporated societies follow the BC Society
Act and we strongly recommend reading it. Knowing
this Act will help your organization -- it once saved
the CNHA. You can also find Society
Act Regulations.
Bourinot's
Rules of Order
Bourinot's rules are Canada's own Rules of Order.
We use these rules at CNHA committee and membership
meetings. Robert's
Rules of Order are a more widely used reference
for community and non-profit groups.
Charities
Directorate
The Canada
Revenue Agency (CRA) registers qualifying organizations
as charities, gives technical advice on operating
a charity, and handles audit and compliance activities.
Chemainus
Neighbours
This is a local site where anyone can post announcements,
upcoming events, photos, and news about the Chemainus
community. Look for activities for the Cowichan
Neighbourhood House Association and other organizations
on the calander.
Community Kitchens
The CNHA is currently working on setting up a Community Kitchen. There is a network of Community Kitchens in BC, with a wonderful website. Find information on the latest workshops, Food Safe Programmes, and steps to setting up a community kitchen. There are even great recipes and a "Many Hands" cookbook especially for community kitchens.
Cowichan
Valley Regional District
Interested in the local government
and departments? The CVRD website is the place to
visit. It has the latest information about water management,
recyling, transit, recreation, and future developments.
For information specific to each township or area,
however, check out the individual websites for Duncan,
Ladysmith,
Lake
Cowichan, and North
Cowichan. North Cowichan no longer lists the e-mail
addresses for councilors on their website, but you
can contact them through the Deputy
Municipal Clerk.
Volunteer
Cowichan
This site has all sorts of information for citizens
who want to make a difference in their neighborhoods,
including a wealth of links
to other organizations. In addition Volunteer
Canada has a page of resources for people who
manage
volunteers. The Ladysmith Resource Centre Association
also has a useful page on volunteer
information.
Other
organizations
Some
of the local organizations that work with us have
websites: Kiwanis
Club , Boys
and Girls Club of Victoria, Cowichan
Family Life, Capernwray
Bible School, and
Chemainus
Rotary Club. Chemainus.com
has links to other organisations, including a page
for seniors.
We'll add to this list as members submit more links.
Free
(but quality) Software
Need office software, but can't afford it?
Open Office
gives you just about everything that MS Office and
WordPerfect Suite give you, except it's free. It runs
on both Windows and Linux.
Have an older version of MS Office and can't open
newer documents? Download the free Word
2003 viewer or Excel
2003 viewer, which will allow you to open, view,
and print, but not edit newer versions of Office files.
Need to make photo albums, but don't know much
about making websites? JAlbum
is an easy to use photo album maker, with ftp (file
transfer) functions. Need anti-virus software,
but don't have much money? AVIRA is currently the best free version according to reports. AVG has a free
version of their anti-virus software for home
users, and ZoneAlarm
has a free firewall for home users. AVAST
also has a free antivirus application, which some
prefer over AVG. Finally, LavaSoft makes a free version
of Ad-Aware
to rid your computer of spyware.
