The Cowichan
Neighbourhood House Association (CNHA) is made up of over 100 members,
and runs almost entirely on volunteer labour.
We are both a community Resource Centre and a Youth Centre. In essence,
though, the CNHA is an association of neighbours helping neighbours --
financed by donations, and run on volunteer spirit. Our youth refer to
the Fire Hall as a "volunteer powered machine."
In
1997, the Cowichan Neighbourhood House moved into the Old Chemainus Fire
Hall, located at 9796 Willow Street in Chemainus, BC, across from the
water wheel, and next door to the Seniors' Centre (see map, transit schedule, Greyhound schedule, or VIA Rail's "Malahat"
Day-Liner). It is from the Old Fire Hall that we run
our Family Resource Centre and Youth Activities.
Over
the years, we have put in tens of thousands of dollars and tens of thousands
of volunteer hours fixing up the Old Chemainus Firehall.
There is a gymnasium with a sound system
upstairs large enough for youth concerts, workshops, and family events
(e.g., Halloween). The building also houses a large kitchen (2 stoves, 2 dishwashers, 2 refrigerators, and a deep
freeze), several computers with free internet,
pool tables, foosball tables, a ping pong table, air hockey tables and a shuffleboard table, 2 lounges, 2 TV sets with DVD
players, a stereo, a piano, an organ, and a host of other resources for
family and youth who need a place to go. The lower floor is wheelchair
accessible, and has a new accessible washroom.
We rent our facilities for non-alcohol events. There are also
opportunities to rent equipment, such as our HD video camera, sound
system, karaoke machine, and stage. (See rental info)
Our reference lending library has reading material
on law, family health, and many other topics.
The
Cowichan Neighbourhood House is a non-profit volunteer organization,
which means we depend on community members like you to exist. Simply put,
the CNHA is us - its members, volunteers and its community supporters.
You can get involved by attending meetings,
joining a committee, volunteering, becoming a member, or by simply participating in
our many family and youth activities. If you cannot help by
participating, we would greatly appreciate any donation
you can provide (computers, books, food, clothing, money, etc.). For
information, please contact us.
