The first hymn at my fathers funeral: the "Doxology" has special meaning to our family as the Ellison family Grace is based upon it. It speaks volumes about my Father. Not just about the person and his life, but about his roots - the product of two great families represented in this community.
.
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow
..Praise him and all his creatures here below.
..Praise him and grant that we
..May with our lives give thanks to thee."
.
As a stepson of Arthur Ellison Sovereign, I have considerable awe for the physical and social legacy of the Ellison and Sovereign families in our community. I am very proud of my father, his life’s accomplishments and his family.
.
It meant a great deal to my father that his ashes came to rest in the Ellison family plot, beside family members that were lifetime friends: Aunt Myra deBeck; Aunt Lil, Uncle Herbie, Uncle Vernon and Mable Ellison, Price and Sohpie Ellison.
.
It means a great deal to me as well, because visiting him will always remind me of how important family and the greater family that is our community is and should be, in our lives.
How it is such a wonderful thing to be able to look back and see a life so well spent.
.
Each of us who knew him have personal memories of my father.
For me, one overall image stands clear.
Of all the people in my life, my dad was the nicest person I have ever known.
And in the end, it's hard to think of anything nicer that can be said of anyone.

Pediatric Endowment Fund Honours Dr. Art Sovereign
.
"A much beloved physician will be remembered for his compassion and dedication, through an Endowment Fund established in his name with the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.
.
Dr. Art Sovereign, a long time pediatrician who was known for his community causes - especially those involving children - passed away on March 13, at the age of 77.
.
A grandson of Vernon pioneers Price and Sophie Ellison, Dr. Sovereign was born and raised in Vancouver. He joined the RCAF straight from school, trained as a navigator and spent two years in England. On returning to Canada, he graduated from the University of Alberta, interned at Vancouver General Hospital and after a year in pediatrics, started a practice in Vernon in 1955. Dr. Sovereign obtained his specialty in pediatrics at the Toronto Sick Children's Hospital and the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg after which he returned to Vernon as the first pediatric specialist at VJH. The children's ward at VJH is named in Sovereign's honour. He was also involved with N.O.N.A., My School and the Attention Deficit Disorders Association.
.
Retired for several years, Dr. Sovereign and his wife Agnes were recognized by the City of Vernon in 2001 with the Freedom of the City award.
.
The Medical Staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital decided to honour the works and memory of Dr. Sovereign by establishing the Art Sovereign Pediatric Endowment Fund. The capital, or principal in the Endowment Fund will be invested in perpetuity and only the annual income from the Fund will be used to support the equipment and program needs of the Art Sovereign Pediatric Unit at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Over $15,000 has already been donated to the Endowment Fund. The Art Sovereign Pediatric Endowment Fund is an "open" fund, meaning that individuals or organizations who wish to honour the good works and memory of Dr. Sovereign can make tax deductible contributions to help build up the Fund which will, in turn, increase the amount of annual income the Fund generates. Each year, a committee comprised of VJH Physicians will meet to determine how the current income from the Endowment Fund will be spent.
