Description of Launch:
Wood ramp built over
a cliff launch. Wire assist is almost always needed
especially when soarable - most the time 2 wiremen.
We
fixed up the ramp in 2007 with some new wood and felled some trees in front
of launch.
Directions to Launch:
Because of snow the
road to launch is usually open from the end of June till mid September.
A wire assist is usually
required. The LZ is 5 miles from take off so lift must be present to reach
it. (It normally is).
Road
to launch is good but lots of big rocks slow going for last 2 km. Can make
it with 2 wheel drive if have the clearence. 4 wheel is better.

Soaring Information
and Weather Notes:
This
site is ussually pretty windy but ussually calmes in early evening.
Good place for out
and returns. Watch out for sink over Sparwood.
Landing
field is still the same very large field long glide out, sometimes with
sink. Best to take a ridge out to LZ. for best chance of lift or less sink.
Description of LZ:
Level grassy field
along side the highway west of Fernie, shortly before the Fernie Ski Hill
turn off.
Must be soarable to
reach LZ (Usually it is)
There
is a railway crossing to get in landing feild
WE
ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE VEHICLES ACROSS TRACKS. MUST PACK GLIDERS OUT
OF FEILD.
This
is a very short walk. We can open gates as long as we close them when done.
Directions to LZ:
An easy Intermediate.
LZ. There is an emergency field below launch. If you must use it, get out
as soon as possible as we are not welcome.
Please contact a local
flyer before flying here for updated info. There is also a good chance
that they will want to fly as well.
There is a Provincial
campsite nearby.
Other Information:
This is a beautiful
site to fly. If you do not make it to the landing field there is an emergency
field at the bottom
but get out fast,
we are not welcome there, Call locals before you fly, they may come with
you.

Description of Launch:
Both
launches are excellent for paragliders. The launch is quite top landable
for PG's. Photo
Shallow launches suitable
for SW / W / NW winds. Sometimes referred to as the Estella site, as launch
is from the old mine access road.
Several launches allow
a range of acceptable wind directions, with the highest and best one facing
SW.
(The
wooden launch ramps are obsolete and no longer used - continue driving
past them to the launches.)
The first
launch is very shallow at the corner where the road comes around to face
the Valley.
The
main launch is 200m further along where gravel has been pushed over the
road.
The
slope is a bit shallow and requires strong foot launch skills, a good hard
run and ensuring your wing is flying level to launch safely.
There
is a grade change where the gravel meets the slope so avoid launching HGers
nose high.
Paragliders
commonly launch from the grass in front of the dirt launch used by HG's.
Pilots
will sometimes pack their glider down past the gravel to launch directly
off the slope.
Vehicle / Transportation Requirements: Use 4X4 to avoid damaging the road.
Directions to Launch:
Turn onto Wasa Loop
Rd. After several hundred meters, turn right on Lazy Lake Rd.
Take
this 6 km until the turn for the Lewis Creek FSR. Turn right on this
road and follow to ~ 8 km.
Take
the right fork at 8 km and cross the creek.
Launches
will be below the road as soon as you can see Wasa Lake from this road
(~14 km or so)
Times to Fly:
It’s strongly recommended
that you fly with a local pilot for the first time.
The Wasa Fly-In is
an annual held in early to mid June. June 6, 7 and 13, 14th 2009.

Soaring Information
and Weather Notes:
Pilots must contact
the FIC and / or FSS Cranbrook 250-426-5641 Fax:
250-426-6312
- especially
if going XC to the south due Victor Airway 506 and 517 descending into
the Cranbrook / Kimberley Airport.
HAZARDS:
All the precautions used in mountain flying should be observed at Estella.
The only real pucker
factor comes in over the landing field, when you see how switchy the breeze
can become.
The triangle field
generates a lot of thermals, and a number of advanced pilots have broken
gliders in it due to turbulence.
Later in the day,
during calm or glass-off conditions it's OK.
Description of LZ:
1.
The main LZ landowner, Lloyd Jones is very accommodating. There
is a powerline running through the middle of Lloyd's field. Photo
-
Rule #1: He absolutely insists that everyone talks to him before
they land in his field.
He won't give you permision to land there due to liability but won't have
you arrested if you do because you at least came and asked.
-
Rule #2: Never ever for any reason climb through or over a fence. Don't
pass gliders over a fence just stay away from them completely.
Use the gates: that's what they are there for. All other common site courtesy
applies. ie garbage, loitering, drinking beer in the LZ.
2. The
triangular field next to Lazy Lake (N of launch) is an acceptable place
to land after a sled run.
There
is a powerline running along the road at the edge of the 'triangular LZ'
Photo
3. Pilots can land
on the Lazy Lake beach provided beach use is minimal.
4. If you gain altitude,
landing west beyond Wasa Lake on the overgrown runway strip is OK (it's
an unused portion of the old highway).
The local farmers are
almost all unhappy about gliders landing in their fields,
Please do not make
the situation worse for local pilots by further disturbing any landowners!
Directions to LZ:
The
main LZ Lloyd's is past the Louis Creek turn off just before you get to
Lazy Lake. It's a huge field bisected by a power line.
There
are usually horses in one of the fields and they are worth $10K-40k each
so stay away from what ever field they are in.
The
triangle field (crown land) is about 1 km (left fork) past Lloyd's place.
Other Information:
It’s strongly recommended
that you fly with a local pilot for the first time.
Apart from the bomb
out LZ this is a nice site to fly with fantastic scenery.
