Northern Plains Regional Director's Message
May 2010
Greeting to all in the Northern Plains Region,
Another Successful Show Season has come to an end, and Central Office is
busy tabulating Regional and National Winners.
I'd like to thank the Minn-Kota Feline Club for taking us out with a bang.
Unfortunately I was not able to attend the show, but heard that I missed yet
another great one put on by these folks. Thank you for all the hard work you
do year after year. We appreciate it very much.
Ushering in the new Show Season in our region will be MCCI. Make sure to
enter the Manitoba Cat Club's Show on July 3 and 4 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
They have a great line-up of judges scheduled and plans are well under way
for the Regional Banquet. The Banquet will be held SATURDAY JULY 3rd, 2010
from 7-10:30 pm. at POLONEZ RESTAURANT, 393 Marion Street in Winnipeg, it is
located only 3 blocks from the Show Hall and all the food is homemade.
This will be a Buffet Dinner
• Chicken Cutlet
• Caesar Salad
• Meatballs with gravy
• Mashed Potatoes
• Cabbage Roll
• Perogies
• Rolls
• Coffee/Tea
Cost is $20.00 p/p including tax
Canadian Beer/Shots are $3.75 inc. tax
The venue is a small cozy little place with a great patio in front where you
can enjoy the evening with your refreshments.
Plan to come out and eat, drink and be merry as we celebrate our regional
winners.
I am grateful to Heather Keys, Laura Cross and Robert Jacobs for searching
out venue options for this event.
The 2009-2010 ACFA Show Season ended April 30th. Due to shortage of time
between the release of names for the regional winners and the planned
banquet I am asking you to be prepared somewhat in advance. If your cats did
well this show season, and you think you may be receiving an award, this is
the time to start gathering up or taking photos to send into our regional
and national awards presentation editors.
We will need photos of your winning cats with information such as registered
name, breeder and owner to add to the PowerPoint presentation.
I will also need you to respond as quickly as you can if there is any
discrepancies in the final scoring, this will allow us plenty of time to
correct things before the awards are presented.
Doing the PowerPoint Presentation showcasing the Northern Plains winners
will be Barb Belanger. Thank you very much Barb for doing this again for us
this year.
Send your Photos and information for the Regional Awards to:
Barb Belanger jbobtails@shaw.ca
203 Cordova St.
Winnipeg MB. Canada R3N 1A2
Email is preferred.
If you are using snail mail please write information on separate paper and
not on back of photos. Photo(s) MUST be received no later than June 15,
2010. If you want your cat’s photo(s) returned, please send a
self-addressed, stamped envelope with the photo(s).
Send your Photos and Information for the ACFA Yearbook to:
Ray Benter artshow@dwx.com
Ray is the new ACFA Yearbook editor.
The 2010 Annual will be held in Kent, Washington this year on August 17th to
20th 2010. Seattle airport is a mere 7 miles from the motel, which offers
courtesy transportation. Following the 4 days of meetings will be the Annual
Banquet and Awards, a chance for ACFA to celebrate and Honor the Top cats in
the association.
The weekend will also bring another great show put on
by the Island Cat Fanciers Society / North Cascades Cat Fanciers. These
folks are working hard to build up ACFA's presence in the NW Region and
doing a fantastic job of it, so please plan to attend this week of events,
make it a holiday for the whole family or just a break for you from the
family. Thursday August 19 & Saturday August 21, 2010 - two 3 hour
Judging Schools will be presented by Kay Hanvey – details TBA
I am sad to report that due to lack of accommodations Prairie Feline
Fanciers will not be holding their annual show in Estevan this year. The
club members looked at other possible locations but they felt it was best to
postpone the show until September of 2011. We will all be looking forward to
their show again next year.
Halloween will be again celebrated this year in Sioux Falls. Big Sioux will
be hosting their show October 30th and 31st 2010. This is always a fun show
to attend with plenty of costumes and treats. If you have never been to one
of their shows then you need to plan to attend it this year.

January
2010
Greetings to All,
I
hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is rested up and ready to
get back into Show Mode.
In
2009 four Northern Plains clubs renewed their club charters and I thank
you for all the hard work that goes into keeping the clubs going. At times
it seems to be a thankless duty until we look back at all we have done to
make people more aware of cats and their needs.
Remember that Club Charters Expire
on March 31st
2010.
The Northern Plains region to date has successfully
hosted four shows for the 2009 -2010 show season. Minn-Kota Cat Fanciers
who usually hold the last show for our region was forced by Mother Nature
to move the show to the first weekend in May. This club had double the
headaches and work that come along with planning two shows. All things
considered they pulled it off and hosted another one of their fantastic
shows.
Manitoba Cat Club Inc. hosted their 74th
& 75th annual shows.
Prairie Feline Fanciers Inc hosted their 3rd
and 4th shows.
Big Sioux not only hosted a wonderful show but also
hosted the Regional Awards Banquet. The new show hall was very spacious
and we hope this will be the future venue for all their upcoming shows.
Yet to come is Minn -Kota Feline Club’s “Sex and the
Kitty” which will be held in Fargo North Dakota on April 3rd
and 4th 2010. Please join us for the competition and
camaraderie that will be found at this our final show in the region for
the 2009-2010 show season.
MCCI is also well underway with plans for their 2010
show July 3rd & 4th 2010 and this year if all goes according to
plan they will be hosting the Regional Awards Banquet. Watch for updates
as they are available.
PFF is also in the stages of planning their show
September 18th & 19th 2010.
October 30th and 31st
will find us enjoying another show hosted by
Big Sioux Cat Fanciers.
Congratulations to the clubs and thank you to all
the exhibitors who supported them!
I would to encourage all clubs to submit to our web
master stories about the things you are doing within your community. I am
personally aware of what MCCI and Minn-Kota have done and continue to do,
but let’s share this with all our members.
I also encourage anyone out there that is thinking
of forming a club in your area to contact me. There are now many ways to
hold meetings without the long drives once a month. Let us help you get
things up and running. Together we can make our region one of the largest
in ACFA once again.
Speaking of our web master, I’d like to thank Barb
Belanger for the fantastic job she does in the development and up keep of
the Northern Plains web site. I’d also like to thank her for the great job
she does on the PowerPoint Presentations used at the Regional Awards.
Without the presentations the banquets would be a little dry. Barb also
does a great job on publishing the ACFA News Letter, so when you see her
please let her know how much we appreciate her dedication and hard work.
Just a few other things I’d like
to draw to your attention if I may.
We are looking for a regional
representative to the disciplinary committee (formerly jurisprudence),
which will be headed by Kathy Irmscher. Please let me know if you are
interested.
In 2009 the Northern Plains Region had 41 ACFA
members.
- 5 are life members
- 32 are regular members
- 4 are family members
There are many other people in the region who are
active members of their local clubs but are not currently ACFA members and
I encourage you to seriously consider becoming an active part of our
association. The more voices we have to speak up in our region the more
capable we are to make changes within ACFA. Your membership will also save
you money on litter registrations, pedigrees and so on. As well we are
seeing more clubs offering a discount for show entries if you are an ACFA
member. So there are great advantages to renewing or taking out a
membership in the association.
Expiration of ACFA memberships was December 31st
2009. Only with you can we grow ACFA and put it back on top.
The evening of February 19th and the day
of February 20th 2010 will bring the Semi-Annul Meeting in
Kansas City Missouri. I and a few other Board Members believe that this
one day meeting should be evaluated to see if we could not handle it in
another way. The cost of flights and accommodations are far too high for
something that could be handled either at the Annual or using something
like NetMeeting. If any of you have ideas they would like to share or
comments please send them my way and I will relay them to the rest of the
BOD.

History of the
Northern Plains Region
The Manitoba Cat Club
hosted the first show held in the newly formed Northern Plains Region, and
the last Western Canada Regional Awards Banquet on July 1 and 2, 2006.
Big Sioux Cat Fanciers
hosted the first Northern Plains Regional Awards Banquet December 29th, 2007
in conjunction with their "Cat's Pyjamas" Show.
Our long time Regional Director
Jim Mendenhall retired from his position at the Brandon University in
the spring of 2009, and moved out of our region to Kelowna, BC. The
members thank him for his many years of devotion to our region, and wish him
well in his retirement.
The 2009-2010 Show season
started off with the re-scheduling of Minn-Kota's Mama Meow Show from
April to May because of the flooding of the Red River in the spring.

Manitoba Cat Club
presented their Mardi Gras themed show on the July 4th weekend.

We were pleased to welcome
David Drysdale of Estevan, SK as our new Regional Director. David
represented us at the 2009 Annual Meeting of ACFA in Concord, NC in August,
then came home to organize a terrific 10 Ring Show for the Prairie Feline
Fanciers Club in September.

Big Sioux Cat Fanciers'
8 Ring show was held on the weekend of October 31-November 1. The NP
2008-2009 Regional Awards Banquet and Halloween costume party were held on
the 31st of October.
Photos of a little "added
excitement" outside the show hotel - thanks to Joanie Johnson.
